He lost them all for not being strong enough.  

Never good enough.  

What is his purpose if he cannot protect those whom he loves? 

With a useless leg, a missing eye, two chopped fingers, sentenced to a wheelchair. How will he protect you?  

He can’t. Not like this.  

The ring of fire vanishes, and the whistle dwindles. You hum a song, pour boiling water in the mugs.  

Levi takes a deep breath, sucking in the smell of chai tea brewing in the kitchen. Fuck. You steeped it for too long and now it’s ruined.  

“I made butter cookies too, Levi.” You chirp from the kitchen. The spoons and saucers clatter on the metallic tray.  

“Thanks.” He mutters in his fist. You slip on the chair in front of him and heave a sigh, tugging at your shirt to fan your clammy face. “Drinking tea in this weather is for the insane.”  

Gray eyes rise, “who says I’m sane?” He smirks, his lips teasing the brim of the mug. “Nasty, but thanks.” 

You rolled the eyes, brushing off the cookie crumbs from the table. “At least the cookies saved the day.” You dip another cookie into the tea and Levi only stares as you ignite another war. Particles of wheat and butter sink to the bottom. The most exciting thing that’s happened. Without titans, life’s become… boring. At least for someone whose purpose was to sever titan’s napes.  

“So…” 

“So…” 

You look around, scratching an itch under your chin. Blood rushes under your cheeks. “Are you free this Saturday evening?”  

He snorts. “Oh, you know, just living the dream—my calendar is packed with thrilling activities like rearranging my sock drawer and debating the merits of different types of brews.” 

“Sounds exciting.” 

“What do you want?”  

“You and I, nicely dressed, slurping pasta at Luigi’s.” You bite your lip. “Before you ask, yes, it is a date.”  

“A date?” He raises a brow. “With me?” He blinks twice.

You fiddle with your hands under the table, pull at the hems of your shorts. “We can skip the date part and just cuddle in my bed, or in your bed. It’s up to you.”  

“With me?” He cocks his head to the side, jabs a finger to his chest.  Sharp senses for the fight; dense as a brick for love. You shake the head, and slam your palms on the table, stirring the drinks. Levi looks at you wide eyed. He can’t be helped.

“Yes! You!” You frown. “Sorry to shoot point blank, but apparently your brain doesn't take cues.” You jump onto your feet, swerve around the table and clasp his face in your hands. “It’s always been you, silly.”

His lips tremble against you; your breath mingling with his. His irises quiver, and suddenly he closes his eyes. Tears squeeze through his lids. A dream in reverse.  Don’t you see what he sees in the mirror every morning? A fraction of what he used to be.

He's not... He's never been...

"You're enough, Levi. More than enough." You bump his cheek with your nose. "Always looking out for me. Always. And I want to make you happy as much as you have made me happy." You reel away by a fraction, brushing the tears off his cheeks. He takes a long, shaky breath that brings an end to his sobbing. "I'll take care of you, Levi. If you allow me."

Modern AU, dad Levi, being a family, adopted child, engagement, romance.

You and Levi have been dating for a few months and he decides he can't wait anymore. Levi proposes and whisks you off your feet. You need to tell Furlan, so Levi and you decide to go to take him on a day out and some dinner before telling him about the engagement.

Giggles filled the bedroom as the sun began to rise. The muscular attractive body of your man lay against yours. His loving lips covered your face in sweet kisses. Last night, he proposed to you and you accepted. So, all night and this morning you had been confirming your love.

You sighed as you played with Levi's hair. "We should get up for the day. We need to tell Furlan that we're getting married."

Levi hummed in thought. "How about we go to an arcade and then get pizza after?"

"Oh! That sounds like so much fun."

He kissed the end of your nose. "I'll go wake up Furlan." He jumped out of bed and clicked his joints before stretching the muscles on his naked body. "Mmmmm, I feel so refreshed."

You stared at the scratches on his back. "I'm glad. My hips ache."

He yanked on his boxers and then his trousers. "Sorry, I get very passionate."

You giggled. "I enjoyed every single moment. I believe I said yes a lot."

Levi smirked. "You did." He kissed your cheek. "I love you."

"Love you too." You slipped out of bed. "I'll make breakfast."

"Are you sure?"

You started to change. "Yeah. I'm happy to. I'll make chocolate chip pancakes."

Levi moaned. "Sounds so good."

"Do you want a breakfast tea or earl grey?"

"Ooo, earl grey, my love."

You slapped him on the bum. "Got it!"

The morning was filled with laughter and fun as you made pancakes. Furlan was so excited to go to an arcade and play some games. You were mum now in his life. Your family worked together so perfectly and was always filled with love and care.

Furlan was wiggling in his car seat as soon as Levi put him in. He was kicking his little legs and singing along to the songs on the playlist you'd made. You and Levi sang along with him and made it a fun family thing. Furlan had yet to notice the engagement ring on your finger.

Furlan ran over to you and grabbed your hand. "Momma, hold my hand."

You giggled. "Is this so I don't get lost?"

"Yes. You are my momma. No one else can have you."

You scooped him up into your arms and hugged him. "You are adorable."

Levi placed his hand on your bum. "What about me?"

Furlan hummed in thought. "Ummm."

Levi gasped and pretended he was hurt. "My own son doesn't want me. Oh, I see it. Now you have mummy you wanna swap, huh? No more single dad, you want a single mum."

Furlan laughed. "I love you, daddy."

"I'm too hurt."

You laughed. "Don't worry, just give him a hug and a kiss and he'll forgive you."

Levi took Furlan from you and spun around with him. Furland squealed with laughter as Levi kept spinning. Levi stopped and threw his son in the air and caught him. He kissed his puffy cheek and smiled. "All forgiven."

Furlan hugged Levi tightly. "You're the best, daddy."

"Thank you."

All three of you went to the arcade and helped Furlan play games. Levi was excellent at the ones that required skills and strength. You were great at the others and knew a few tricks. So, due to the two of you teaming up, Furlan one a lot of things.

After you had finished playing, you went to the food area and ordered some pizza. You got a family one and helped Furlan with eating his slices. Levi cleaned his little face and made sure there was plenty to drink.

Levi held your hand and smiled softly at his son. "Furlan? Your mummy and I have something we need to talk to you about."

Furlan stared at you and Levi. Tears slowly filled his eyes. "Don't break up. I'm sorry. I'll be a better boy."

You hugged Furlan tightly. "Shh, it's okay my sweetness. Your daddy and I are not breaking up."

Levi wiped Furlan's tears. "Don't be sorry. You're a very good boy. You're wonderful."

He sniffed and rubbed his tears. "I love you, mummy and daddy."

"We love you so much."

You kissed Furlan's temple. "We love you more than anything."

Furlan smiled. "No breaking up?"

You shook your head. "No breaking up."

Levi leaned over and kissed you. "Not at all. We're getting married."

Furlan gasped as his eyes widened in pure delight. "Married!?"

You showed Furlan the ring on your left hand. "Your daddy proposed last night. We wanted to take you on a day out to tell you."

Furlan welled up and began crying. "I'm so happyyyyy."

You and Levi laughed and hugged Furlan together. You covered your sweet boy's face in kisses and soothed him to calm him. His sobs soon turned into little sniffs until he was all better.

Furlan smiled. "Am I best man?"

Levi played with his hair. "Your uncle Erwin will be, but you can be my secret best man."

"Yes!"

You pinched his cheek. "You can carry the rings."

He squealed in delight. "YES!" He bounced up and down. "When is the wedding? Tomorrow?"

You giggled. "Not that soon. Maybe a few months. We have to plan it."

"But."

Levi kissed the top of Furlan's head. "Soon. You can help us plan."

"Please!"

Levi winked a you. "Perfect."

Levi: *knocks on Eren's door* You alive?

Eren: That's questionable.

Levi: *sighs* I'm coming in.

Levi opens the door. Eren is lying on his bed, eyes on the wall opposite to it without really focusing on anything. Levi sits next to him. Even if Eren is facing in Levi's direction, he doesn't meet his eyes.

Levi: What's wrong? You've been acting weird for the last two days.

Eren: You noticed?

Levi: Hard not to.

Eren: You say that but you're the first one to check on me. You always are...

Levi: Are you gonna tell me what the hell is going on?

Eren: I don't think I want to. Is that okay?

Levi: If you're not being an absolute idiot and boiling it up to just shit everything out later, it is.

Eren: I don't think I am... Ah... Captain?

Levi: Yes?

Eren: Would it... Hm... It would probably sound weird but... Could you... Pet my hair?

Levi: *blushes slightly, pulls back the hair that is on Eren's face and caresses his head* Don't complain if instead of helping I just give you a headache.

Eren: I wouldn't, even if that was the case.

Levi: *keeps petting* Good, cause I am not taking your shit.

Eren: *looks Levi in the eyes, smiles* Liar. You always do.
