Zeon sends the commando unit Cyclops Team to attack an EFF base in the Arctic – a laboratory where the Federation are continuing their G-4 Project.
Cyclops Team arrive while the project's materials are being loaded for transfer to space, and although the Zeon veterans easily tear through the base's defenders, they are delayed long enough for the Federation shuttle to escape.

Zeon forces from Granada stage a battle at Ribo as a cover for Bernard Wiseman –reassigned to the Cyclops Team– to be inserted into the colony, disguised as a civilian transport pilot.
Wiseman's ship carries a disassembled MS-18E Kämpfer, which the team will use to carry out Operation Rubicon. Wiseman's new teammates are able to facilitate his arrival, ensuring the dismantled mobile suit enters Ribo undetected.

Cyclops Team's cover is blown, and a firefight breaks out in the hangar of their target, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1. Captain Hardie Steiner and Gabriel Ramirez Garcia are killed before they can accomplish their mission.
The Gundam launches to engage the Kämpfer, which has arrived at the Federation base. After using up its disposable weapons eliminating Scarlet Team, the Kämpfer is left vulnerable and is quickly overwhelmed by the Gundam, resulting in the death of Mikhail Kaminsky.
Operation Rubicon ends in total failure. Bernard Wiseman is left as Cyclops Team's only survivor.

Acting on the intel recovered by Bernard Wiseman at Ribo, Zeon forces commence Operation Rubicon. Cyclops Team is deployed from Granada to find and destroy the Federation's G-4 Project at any cost.

Cyclops Team's Mikhail Kaminsky deploys in the Kämpfer, entering Ribo's residential zone to distract the Federation forces from his teammates' infiltration of the secret base.
The EFSF's LMSD-76 Gray Phantom enters the colony, launching the Scarlet Team –consisting of pairs of RGM-79GS GM Command Space Types, RX-77D Guncannon Mass Production Types, and RGM-79SP GM Sniper 2s– to engage the Zeon mobile suit.
Taking advantage of the Kämpfer's high speed and abundance of weapons, Kaminsky wipes out the entire Scarlet Team as they descend from their mothership.

Disguised as Federation soldiers, Cyclops Team members Steiner, Garcia, and Wiseman infiltrate the EFSF's secret Ribo base via the colony's maintenance tunnels.

Cyclops Team start reassembling the Kämpfer inside the warehouse they are using as a base, and begin scouting the colony for the EFSF's hidden facility with the help of Alfred Izuruha, who has become very attached to Bernie.
Captain Hardie Steiner plants a listening device on Al, so the team will know if the kid tells anyone about their presence in Ribo.
