Fun Escapades in Figuring Out a Broken, Old DSLR
Holy Crap! I've somewhat figured out the Nikon D1!
After searching the internet far and wide, checking all of the fabulous Nikon-in-the-90s custom settings, and lots of fiddling, I think I finally figured out why my new D1 is being weird!
After a little process of elimination with every button that actuates the mirror and shutter, I found that if I hold down the aperture preview button while also holding the mirror up, the shutter fires and after 5 seconds or so resets and is good for about 10 good exposures before it fouls up again.
I think I'm still going to put it under the knife and see if I can clean it, inspect the shutter, etc. The curious little child in me loves the idea of opening it up, though the responsible adult in me (who's usually never around) shudders at the idea of putting it back together. However, it seems to be improving after every time I un-jam it, so maybe it just needs some healthy cycling.
I shot the photos below with it! I shot these in my room and all are unedited except the last one. Not bad for 2.7 MP!!!
Quirky things I've discovered/chuckled about/over this camera:
- Fastest shutter speed is 1/16,000 - I have no idea if I'll ever need that
- Actually debuted in 1999, A PRO DSLR FROM THE 90s #museumpiece #queueprincesong
- One of the major 90s technologies it possesses is the custom settings function, goddamn I have no idea how someone could memorize these
- The battery weighs more than a late 90s/early 00s Nikon consumer SLR (N55, N65, etc)
- The body is so huge that it could surely be used to fend off a bear
- There's more dust on the sensor than a top shelf in an antique store
- The time it takes the image to display on the screen after firing the shutter is PATHETIC
- It autofocuses faster than my D200... :\
- 2-POINT-7 MEGAPIXELS
- I BOUGHT IT IN A THRIFTSTORE
I can't wait to shoot more with it.
**UPDATE: I've deduced that this ol' cement mixer is doing what it does due to the aperture preview arm being damaged. Essentially, the shutter cannot fire continuously, or more than once per 2-3 seconds, otherwise the cycling gets messed up. If I baby it though, it works just fine!
This is good news, as I do not need to continuously shoot with it; all I need is a camera that will meter nicely, be very durable, and help me create some lo-fi yet stunning prints.
Can't wait to bring this thing with me to Southern California in May. =) =)
