I saw your post of “as someone who has Tourette’s” and it going on about why writers shouldn’t use *tic*. And I was wondering if you could tell me what I should put instead? I’ve just got a request (not for Creepypasta but another fandom) and yh. I have an idea of some stuff like nose scrunching and mild swearing. But that’s kinda all I know. I’m sorry if you don’t wanna answer and find this offensive my apologies. You don’t have to answer but thank you for reading this. Have a lovely day/night.
Super sorry, I saw this a long time ago then completely forgot about it. Here's the post if you want to read it. I know, it's old. Anyway, I just suggest describing the tics. Obviously everyone with tourettes has different tics and experiences, as well as their own problems with comorbidity and the like. Also! Tics can change overtime. So if you're writing something over the span of years I definitely suggest switching things up. Moving on, here are some tics I (or my friends with tourettes) have experienced:
"I love you" in sign language
"a" in sign language
Lots of one handed sign language, actually
Sniffling
Meowing
Blinking
Extending limbs (sometimes violently. It hurts.)
Stuttering
Clearing your throat
Rolling your neck around
Scrunching your face up
Humming
Coughing
If you're looking for more examples, there are lots of people talking about their tics (as well as some more writing advice on writing someone with tourettes) in the various tourettes tags on tumblr. Here’s a good post about it. Hope this offered a bit of help, even if it's late asf.
