One thing I've noticed in the time I've spent in the Danganronpa and moreso Fanganronpa communities is that there's this whole "Canonronpa bad, Fanganronpa good" sentiment that circulates through a lot of the fandom. Of course, it's perfectly valid to prefer Fangans over the canon games, but I've noticed a lot of people seem to hold Fangans as a concept in a really high regard over the games, and I think this bleeds into how people write their own Fangans.
A lot of Fangans feel like they were written not so much out of love and appreciation for the series they're born from, but more out of spite, both for the games themselves and for their creators. A lot of Fangans feel like they were written simply because the author looked at the canon games, went "I can do better", and decided to try and prove that. It's almost ironic, because a lot of the Fangans that people hype up as being better than the canon games were made out of a clear and genuine love for them. I suppose what I'm getting at here is that works made out of spite are far less likely to actually end up being compelling, and you should really focus that energy into something you actually like instead, because detaching from the writing aspect for a moment, it's just plain not good to constantly dwell on something you obviously don't like.
Greetings, do you have any favorite early Danganronpa memories during those times?
I played DR and SDR2 myself in June/July of 2013, and only started talking to other people in the fandom around late that year.
I remember really enjoying finding good fic and art, and meeting lots of cool folks through it.
Most of my more vivid memories were later on, when Nate and I were going to a lot of events, but I do remember right before DR:AE came out, I went to the OG Namja Town event with a couple friends who aren't in Japan anymore. I got to do an irl Komaru experience where they gave you a megaphone and you basically did laser tag with people in Monokuma costumes.
