Hello, I love your blog and have followed you for years! I was also hoping you could answer a question about a kimono for me?
I have a komon kimono and it has and extra collar sewn in under the normal one. I don't mean it is an open collar, I mean it looks like a han-eri flap is sewn in along the length of the collar.
Do you have any idea what it is for?
Hi! So glad you chose to explore kimono world with me for so long :D
From what I gather, what you describe could be a date-eri (decorative collar-strip mimicking layered-kimono look). It's often used with furisode and so a pretty uncommon feature for a komon kimono - but maybe past owner wanted to jazz it up!
It's put on like this (source):
Otherwise, this additional collar couuuuld be part of a 比翼 hiyoku (additional collar mimicking layered-kimono look). But it's pretty unlikely as those are usually a full fake layer (=also on skirt), and reserved for formal kimono (like tomesode, especially kurotomesode).
Hiyoku is the white strip you see by kurotomesode collar area. They are as large as normal kimono collar, and must be folded too when dressing:
