Mental/Cognitive

To him, competition is intimacy, so someone who can meet him blow for blow in analysis and timing or even outmaneuver him - even once - ignites a rare dopamine spike. Someone who questions his deductions, offers new perspectives, or reaches the same conclusions he does but faster, would catch his attention fast.

When someone is unpredictable, yet internally consistent. He doesn’t like impulsivity for chaos's sake, but someone he can’t fully predict catches his attention. So someone who lights up for one plushie but expresses total disinterest another, or someone who randomly blurts out questions that seem to come from nowhere but actually make sense when they explain it.

Someone who lives in implication truly undoes him. He doesn’t trust overt declarations. Implication is his native language. So, someone who communicates in glances, tone, and leaves things hanging mid-sentence forces him to stay attuned in a way that sustains a low-grade tension that he reads as attraction long before he’ll admit it.

Catching someone in a lie is like his kryptonite. When someone baits a liar into confession or better yet, contradicting themselves is deeply arousing to him. It’s the kind of subtle manipulation he considers art. Especially if they don’t gloat and simply act on the information they obtained, he’s smitten. It registers as competence with emotional restraint - his favourite combination.

Emotional

Emotional restraint. He finds emotional transparency comforting in the sense that he doesn’t have to guess what someone is feeling, but he doesn’t find it compelling. What really draws him in is the concept that something is just out reach. So, someone who is rational and restrained with occasional glimpses of deep emotion that are kept under tight control really gets to him.

The moment restraint cracks. Seeing someone, who’s usually composed, slip lights him up because he feels it’s earned rather than given freely.

Personality

Someone who isn’t a push over. Someone who holds their ground against him, or others, without being reckless or defiant for defiance sake.

Creativity and resourcefulness, especially if it reveals an underlying quality. For example someone who stabs the lid of a pickle jar instead of asking for help to open it would register as intelligent, creative, resourceful, and telling of their independence to him.

Sensory

Someone who subtly makes him more aware of his own body and reactions - eye contact, heart rate - that subtle disruption, the feeling the roles are reversed and he’s the one being observed now, is one of the first things that makes him register his attention towards them as lust.

His detachment means he sometimes forgets his own physical presence so being forced back into embodiment, would be both uncomfortable and addictive.

Dialect

The way they talk. He locks onto word choice and tone more than he lets on.

Someone who is careful with their wording. Word choice matters in terms of how a message is perceived and that sense that every word has a purpose is a hook for him.

Physically

The way their hair flows, bounces, and cascades - especially when they run their hand through their hair

Subtle Intimacy

When someone unconsciously begins to mirror him in mannerism, internal reasoning, expression, or dialect. It registers as unconscious intimacy.

Someone who can hold eye contact with him without judgement or curiosity, or feeling intimidated by him.

Mannerisms

He’s a big mannerisms guy. The way a person types, flips a page, stirs tea. 

The way they hold things, delicately, gentle, almost clinically.

Handwriting. Especially someone who writes quickly and heavy handed, but never loses the eloquence. 

Facial expressions. Especially mildly suggestive ones, like the way they bite their lip or nail when they’re concentrating, or the way a fleeting tug of a smirk when their two steps ahead and know something they’re not quite saying - just letting it be known that they know something. Those expressions, to him, carry intelligence, irony, and withheld amusement and suggest that they’re operating several layers deep.

The way they sit, especially if defies social norms but radiates ease, comfort with themselves, and confidence.

The way they walk. Especially if it’s graceful, never in a hurry, suggestive that they’re deliberate and choosing their timing.

The way they communicate with their eyes. He instinctively responds to subtle side glances that carry the weight of irony, curiosity, fascination, attraction, or warning.

I never talk about L but one main headcanon I have for him is that him and Near are half siblings (same age gap as canon). They didn't know about each other until Near showed up at Wammys. L was a decent brother but eventually got too pulled into his work and stopped keeping promises which lead to Near's resentment of him.

the little things / dad!L

a/n: i’ve been having death-note-characters-as-dads brainrot recently so here have this :)) there’s also a little angst (as a treat)

dad!L would spend hours learning how to do his little girl’s hair, ensuring that she always went to school with the best hairstyles. some days he would do a simple double plait, and others, intricate ballet buns. 

when he drives his daughter home from school, he would revel in her recitation of compliments she got from her classmates on her hair that day. despite his demanding job, dad!L made his daughter his top priority, which manifested in participating in the comparatively smaller parenting duties.

while L’s partner took care of the bulk of the parenting role, he still devoted time to doing the small things for his child: like packing the perfect lunch box (complete with a note), driving to school, teaching her how to play chess, and bedtime.

despite these contributions, L couldn’t help but feel as though he wasn’t doing enough; that he wasn’t pulling his own weight. sure, his job forced him to work for multiple days straight, but was that enough of an excuse for his absence? it should be, and logically, L knows this, but the thought that his little girl might be unhappy with him and is too afraid to say anything about it plagues his mind.

for the time being, L can only tell his daughter that he is busy with his work and hope she understands. while he’s not lying to her, it feels as though he is. to say he’s busy at work is an answer, but an unsatisfactory one at that.

perhaps one day L’s daughter will be old enough to learn what he actually does for work, and maybe even want to take over the role for him. but for now, L will have to make peace with the fact that he’s unable to be more active in raising her, but understand the sentimentality and importance of helping her with the little things.

If L Could Clone Himself

L is exceedingly smart and a bunch of him is practically a team of scientists.

With so many brains thinking at once, tracking down Kira/Light is much easier then it was with one of him.

The clones will start sleeping in shifts. Some clones go to sleep, the others work and vice versa.

Tracking down Kira is a piece of cake now. When they find him, he wouldn't be able to run anywhere.

They truly live up to the title of world's greatest detective.

DN Boys as Parents

L Lawliet

Authoritative

His parenting would be rooted in logic and respect for autonomy and fairness.

He would set clear, consistent rules because they make sense, not because of his own preferences or because he said so.

He would not punish impulsively. He is more focused on discipline than punishment. It would be calm and discussion based, clearly explaining consequences and cause/effect.

His warmth would show subtly through attentiveness, problem-solving, and curiosity about the child’s inner world.

He would encourage independent, critical thinking early. “Why do you think that?” or “What evidence supports your idea?”

He wants a child who reasons, not blindly obeys. 

However, he may seem emotionally distant or overly analytical at times, sometimes missing emotional cues if he’s not in the right head space for them.

Overall, a gentle, logical authority figure.

Light Yagami

Authoritarian

Light is obsessed with control, image, moral superiority, and order; he would likely project that onto a child.

The child would have a lot of rules that would be non-negotiable and tied to Light’s sense of image.

Emotional warmth would be conditional. Providing it when he is proud of his child or when being observed - strictly for appearances. However, it would be withdrawn the instant the child disappoints him or disagrees with him.

He wouldn’t yell or get physical with discipline, but he would lecture, guilt, and manipulate.

He would push his child to strive for excellence. He’d want them to be the most intelligent, polite, composed, and physically attractive person in any room, only second to himself.

However, his approach may create either a rebellious child or an insecure, push over.

Overall, his love would be entirely achievement based, not inherent.

Light has some potential to become more authoritative if his partner is. He may resist at first believing his way is the only correct way, but after seeing how the child responds better to his partner, he’d begin to adapt.

Mihael Keehl

Authoritarian 

Mello’s parenting style would come from a place of intensity and a need for control, especially when stressed. 

He parents with his emotions rather than logic. 

His emotions are loud, reactions fast, and standards high.

Rules would be very inconsistent. He’d have high expectations and strict enforcement when he’s stressed, scared, or dealing with his own self-loathing. It seems cruel - and it is - but it comes from a place of wanting his child to be safe and to do better than him. However, when he’s relaxed, rules become relaxed as well. The child would feel like they’re walking on a land mine with his emotional reactivity.

He’d have difficulty expressing tenderness and affection, but no problem with expressing pride, protectiveness, loyalty, and gassing them up.

When it comes to discipline, he’s impulsive and reactive. He’d scold passionately, maybe even name-call or shame them when he’s not thinking in the heat of the moment. However, he’d regret it later and try to make amends.

However, he would create the same issue in his child that he has, an inferiority complex hidden under an abundance of bravado.

Overall, inconsistent and controlling, but it stems from his own insecurity. However, he does love his child deeply and would burn the world down for them.

Mello could become more authoritative if he has an authoritative partner who can model that approach for him with calm, compassionate reasoning that doesn’t make him feel like the bad guy.

Mail Jeevas

Permissive

He’s conflict-avoidant and values autonomy and freedom. 

He’s calm, easygoing, and would see his child as more of a friend than a subordinate.

He’d have very few rules, mostly grounded in safety and basic respect.

Discipline would be rare and mild, most likely simply redirecting or a casual talk.

He would share his interest with the child if they seemed interested, actually taking pleasure in teaching them about games and tech.

On the down side, he would be the parent that doesn’t attend their games and recitals because he’s not all that interested. Unless the child asked him to be there, then he’d be there.

However, he may enable laziness or not step in enough if the child becomes rebellious. He may also miss things that are going on in his kid’s life as he doesn’t want to intrude and the child may take that as he doesn’t care enough to ask.

Overall, the “cool dad” type. He’s relaxed and patient, all the kid’s friends love him, but he’s a bit too hands off.

He has potential to become authoritative. Strict is rarely in his vocabulary, but if he has a partner that shows him you can be strict without being harsh or compromising individuality, he could adapt.

Nate River

Neglectful

His emotional distance and doubt in his ability to connect would make him mostly absent from his child’s life. He may love them, but there’s always a quiet belief that his child is better off without him, left in the hands of their mother instead - which would also cause conflict with his partner feeling unsupported.

He’d set very minimal rules, preferring natural consequences. However, unlike enforced consequences that prevent the child from ever having to face the natural ramifications, natural consequences are not controlled and therefore could leave the child with their head under water. 

Discipline would be rare. Unless it directly affects  the child’s safety or him - such as knocking down his tower of cards - he wouldn’t intervene.

He may care deeply, but expression of that is low. 

He would treat the child as a tiny adult, respecting autonomy, but offering very little emotional warmth and guidance.

The child may feel he doesn’t care about them at all or sees them as no more significant to him than a work colleague.

Overall, distant and emotionally elusive. 

He has potential to be more authoritative, but he would basically need his partner to hold his hand and would need to observe his partner’s dynamic with the child. Even then, emotional warmth would never come naturally, but he’d try to make a conscious effort.

Externally calm, internally frozen 

There would be a visible shift in his posture, immediate stillness, sharpened gaze.

He would not comment immediately, but when he does his tone would be flat, precise, “I’m familiar with that institution.” 

He’d pause again, deciding how much to disclose while simultaneously suspicious of how much you may already know.

He’d instantly consider if you already know of his upbringing there and the morally ambiguous purpose of the orphanage.

He would feel conflicted on whether to discourage you from adopting from there due to ethical concerns. This is a place of breeding manipulative geniuses, not nurturing children.

He’d recommend another orphanage without giving a real reason. 

However, you pressed for a reason, he’d explain in a factual tone, but with heaviness underneath, “I was raised there. It isn’t a place for children to feel loved. It’s a place to turn them into something useful.”

He wouldn’t be angry, just quiet, internally discomforted. 

It would be one of the few moments you’d sense genuine pain beneath his composed exterior.

Mihael Keehl

His reaction would be sharp and visceral. It would land like a slap.

He’d react before he could check himself, drop whatever he’s holding, eyes wide, tone sharp and loud, “What did you just say?!”

Then almost instantly, tone protective yet bitter, “You can’t be serious. That place is—no. Absolutely not.”

He’d shut it down instantly without an explanation because explaining would mean reopening wounds he’s spent years trying to compartmentalize.

Internally, his flood with flashes of memories of competition, pressure, being second best, feeling love was conditional on perfection.

The idea of bringing a child from that system into their life would feel like contamination, like inviting trauma back in. He wouldn’t be able to articulate that, he’d just know it feels wrong.

After he calms down, he’d reluctantly tell the truth, voice tight with contained emotion, “I grew up there. You don’t want a kid from Wammy’s House. They don’t raise children—they manufacture replacements.” 

He’d then probably run a hand through his hair, muttering something self-directed like, “Figures that’s where you’d pick…”

However, it would be more a pass at fate than at you.

He wouldn’t want you to see how deeply it hit him, but it would be written all over him.

Mail Jeevas

A quiet, stunned pause.

He’d go still before a long exhale as he processes what he just heard.

Then in a dry, almost incredulous tone, half in disbelief, half in irony, “...You said Wammy’s House?”

His mind would be spinning, not exactly with trauma, but more like a dull ache of old ghosts. He’s aware the place shaped his identity. That he was raised to assist, not belong.

The idea of choosing to bring a child from there into a family dynamic feels paradoxical.

He’d eventually explain, in his calm, sardonic way, “That’s… actually where I’m from. Wammy’s House. Not exactly the kind of place you adopt from if you’re looking for ‘healthy upbringing’ material.”

If you expressed confusion or curiosity, he’d downplay it with humor. “Let’s just say they raise problem-solvers, not kids who know what hugs are.”

Then he’d take a long drag of his cigarette and change the subject—still processing privately, but not wanting to dampen her warmth.

He’d turn reflective, maybe nostalgic in a weary sort of way.

Nate River

He’d go still, eye wide in disbelief.

He’d repeat, softly, as if confirming he heard correctly, “...Wammy’s House?”

 Internally, the words trigger layered associations: structure, brilliance, detachment, competition. 

Near doesn’t think of it with pain, exactly—it’s more like a place that explains everything about him. It represents efficiency and logic, but not nurture.

He’d find her choice curious and, if she’s unaware of his background, quietly ironic. A faint smile might flicker, not from amusement, but from the sheer statistical unlikelihood of that coincidence.

He’d calmly explain, calmly, in his measured voice, “That’s where I was raised. It’s not quite what it appears to be. If your intention is to give a child a home, there are better options.”

He wouldn’t speak with bitterness, just cold fact. But internally, he’d feel a strange pang, the realization that what she sees as hope, he still recognizes as control.

Overall, he’s not angry, not shaken, just simply aware of the distance between her perception and his reality.

Breakup Headcanons

L Lawliet

He’d go utterly still at first. Silent. Observant. Studying their expression, tone, word choice. His mind would be scrambling for why they’re leaving. 

When he does speak, it’d be a calm, clipped, “You’re certain?”

It sounds almost detached, but it’s really him looking for any opening, any indication this is up for negotiation and not final. 

He’d feel it like a quiet implosion, a sinking feeling in his stomach, a tightening in his chest. 

He would not understand how someone he chose, after exhaustive discernment, could come to reject him. How he could lose something he thought was secure. 

He’d mentally review every interaction with alarming recall, searching for any overlooked variable, any fracture point, anything he could fix.

He wouldn’t beg or rage, that would violate his respect for their autonomy, but he’d remain involved, “If you wish to end the relationship, I’ll respect that. But I’ll need to understand why.”

He’d press for clarity first, both to gauge if there’s any way this can be fixed and for a sense of closure if it cannot. 

If they needed time to fully end things (such as if they lived together), he’d be conflicted between leaving them be and respecting their choice and wanting to change their mind. Eventually, his emotions would outweigh his principles and he would attempt to subtly change their mind, maintaining proximity more, small acts of service, more breaks from work to devote attention to them, more collaborative engagement if he believes he have been too controlling.

If they still left, he’d maintain composure until they were fully gone, but the cracks would already be there. 

L is prone to depression when he feels he has lost something. He would lose his motivation for cases, indulge himself in sweets, spend restless hours over analyzing the entire relationship until his logic starts running in circles.

He’d eventually recover and return to his work, he’s L, he always does. However, he would carry the loss like a scar, becoming more distrustful and dismissive towards others, believing everyone will hurt him if allowed, that no one will ever truly love him for who is because he is simply unworthy of love.

Light Yagami

A breakup would be a direct assault to his constructed image. It wouldn’t be a failure of love, but a failure of his superiority. 

His first reaction would be arrogant disbelief because who in their right mind would reject him.

“You’re breaking up with me? Why would you throw this away?”

The shift from shock to persuasion would be almost instant, listing ‘logical’ reasons as to why they’re ‘perfect together’.

If that failed, he’d begin manipulative tactics, framing their decision as irrational, impulsive, and emotionally motivated and their loss or guilt tripping if he wanted to appear like the victim.

If she remained firm, he’d narrow his eyes, internally calculating her downfall, “I see. I hope you don’t regret it.”

He would be humiliated - his pride wounded. 

He’d be desperate to reestablish control, possibly framing it as mutual or that he ended it.

If she wavered and decided to stay together, it wouldn’t be long before he’d end things himself just to maintain control, all while making it seem like her fault. “I’ve been thinking and I think you were right. We should break up. You clearly already have your doubts about this, so I think it’d be best for both of us if we just end this now?”

Which would reveal his true intent was to never fix the relationship, but to control, to be the one who ended it.

Mihael Keehl 

Explosive. Hurt disguised as anger.

“What do you mean, you want to break up?!”

To him, relationships are proof that he’s not replaceable, that he’s more than second place. So, them leaving would tap straight into his core insecurity. 

The idea that they’re giving up would sound like a personal failure on his part and simultaneously like a lack of love on their part. In his mind, you don’t give up on what you love, you fight for it.

He’d pace, curse, argue, “You can’t just walk away like that, not after everything.” 

Eventually, it would turn into almost pleading, “I can fix this! Just give me a chance!”

However, if they remained firm, he’d be gruff, “Fine. Go then. I don’t need you anyway.” 

Once he’s alone, he’d stew, thinking, “I’m better off without them. I don’t need nobody. They were never loyal to begin with.”

But that sharp, biting rage at them would soon turn to softer, self directed, insecurity based rage, “Of course they left. I scared them off. I screw up everything good.”

He’d be obsessive, unable to stay away completely. He’d pretend he doesn’t care, but he’d secretly keep tabs on them, happen to frequent the same locations, happen to be friends with their friends, date someone else just to try to make them jealous and come crawling back, taking more risks to try to get their attention and make them reveal they still care.

However, when that doesn’t work, that’s when he’d really break.

He’d never fully move on. Mello loves intensely and remembers everything, so even if he found someone else, you’d still cross his mind every now and then.

Mail Jeevas 

Disbelief, a heart drop feeling, followed by subdued acceptance.

Tone detached, but deeply hurt underneath, “…Yeah. I kinda figured this was coming.”

He’d replay moments he could’ve tried harder, been more present. He wouldn’t lash out. He’d shut down.

If they explained why, he’d stare at the floor, nod a few times, light a smoke.

He’d verify they’re sure, then let them go without protest. Not because he doesn’t care, but because he respects agency more than he trusts his own worth.

However, internally he’d be devastated. He’d withdraw and drown himself in escapism (gaming, chain smoking) because he knows if he talks to someone, if he stops to let reality settle in, he wouldn’t be able to maintain his composure.

He’d internalize it as proof of his inadequacy. 

He’d think, “They got bored. I didn’t try hard enough. I wasn’t enough.”

He might check in weeks later with a simple text, “Hey, you okay?” Not to reopen anything, but because care doesn’t switch off for him.

Nate River 

He would appear calm, eerily calm, “If that’s your decision, I’ll respect it.”

He’d mean it. He believes people act according to their own reasoning, and trying to argue would be inefficient.

Internally, though, it would confirm what he already suspects, that emotional proximity is temporary.

He’d analyze the breakup as though it were a logic puzzle: Which variable failed? Was I inattentive? Too analytical? Did they need something I couldn’t provide?

He wouldn’t cry or plead, but he would remember everything. Even as he continued his routines — toys, cases, silence — his mind would circle back to the moment, replaying tone, phrasing, timing, trying to map where affection ended.

He wouldn’t seek reconciliation, only understanding. 

But long after, he’d keep the memory stored neatly in the same place he keeps all unsolved equations, the ones that hurt to look at.
