Walkable, well planned and with brilliant public transport networks, Frankfurt is an international city that’s very easy to get around. Deutsch not up to scratch? No problem – almost all locals speak some, if not very good, English. Their frankness is often mistaken for rudeness by visitors, but though Frankfurters might appear gruff or standoffish, really they’re a friendly, fun-loving bunch, and after a drink or two in an Apfelwein tavern or one of the best bars in Frankfurt, you’ll probably agree. Alt-Sachsenhausen is home to a couple of great Apfelwein taverns, but for the most part, the area has a bad rep as a horribly touristy party zone. Locals prefer to avoid it, instead making a beeline to Sachsenhausen, where the atmosphere is considerably less drunken and chaotic. In Frankfurt, public transport doesn’t run all night, and if you don’t want to download a ride-sharing app, you’ll need a taxi to get home in the small hours. The Citadel of Dinant, located on a rocky outcrop and accessible both by steps and cable car, offers a spectacular panorama over the Meuse Valley. The first fortifications date back to the 9th century. On these, Vauban built his own castle, which would later be demolished to be replaced with this fortress in 1815. The citadel witnessed heavy fighting between the French and German troops in August 1914. A dedicated space allows visitors to revisit this dramatic page of history. The Lion’s Mound (Butte du Lion) and panoramic painting of the Battle of Waterloo (1815) are the main sights to see on a day-trip to the battlefield (Champ de Bataille) from Brussels. The Battlefield of Waterloo and the panoramic painting has been added to the tentative list of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites. Travelling from Brussels to Waterloo by bus, use bus W (stop Route de Nivelles) or bus 365 (stop Monument Gordon).
