Near Dunkeld Cathedral, Scotland, there is a Larix (larch) tree, which is the last remaining survivor of a group of five, introduced into Scotland in 1738. The Duke of Atholl brought the seedling trees over from the Austrian Tyrol and planted them on his estate. The trees became famous as the seed source for the large scale plantings carried out by the Dukes of Atholl on the hillsides around Dunkeld during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Hoping that everyone manages to have a festive break despite the challenges of this year. At Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, some seasonal parcels have been left in a boat moored to the trunk of a young specimen of the deciduous conifer Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress). This tree thrives in wet conditions and will develop knuckle-like features at the base of the stem known as pneumatophores, these maybe an adaptation to help the roots to breathe or to stabilise the tree.

Festive Greetings!

This female Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) tree was covered in seasonal decorations - fruit. Amazingly this tree species has existed longer than the Atlantic Ocean, it is often known as the ‘fossil tree’.

At the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, UK, the whorls of needles of Pseudolarix amabilis (golden larch, false larch) are turning golden-yellow. This deciduous conifer is a monotypic genus producing a medium-sized tree and needing neutral or acidic soil conditions.

A display by Plant Heritage at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, UK, showed the diversity of the cultivars of Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree) and the species survival over geological time. One of my favourite facts is that this tree species has existed longer than the Atlantic Ocean. The collection holder, Tony Davies, has at least 200 cultivars and the collection is still expanding.

On the north wall of the Cory Lodge, Cambridge Botanic Garden, is a carefully trained specimen of Ginkgo biloba (maidenhair tree). This plant species is a very ancient and goes back in history to before the Atlantic Ocean existed! The natural distribution is now restricted to a few parts of China.

In the Parque de Maria Luisa,Seville, Spain, the deciduous conifer Taxodium distichum (swamp cypress, bald cypress) has grown into an impressive specimen. It was planted between 1850 and 1870.

Sometimes a tree is all a landscape needs! Here Taxodium distichum (bald cypress, swamp cypress) completes the picture. This deciduous conifer has red-brown bark and feathery, light green foliage which turns orange-brown in autumn. It is well adapted to wet waterside conditions.
