Making a dense groundcover and flowering into late autumn is Liriope muscari (big blue lilyturf). This is a tough, evergreen tuberous perennial. It creates dense clumps of narrow, arching, dark green leaves from which erect spikes of small violet-purple flowers emerge. In my garden this plant copes well with shade and dry conditions in a clay soil.

Borders featuring grasses tend to look great at this time of year before storms flatten some of the species. Here the fine, deciduous foliage and airy, curved inflorescences of Eragrostis curvula (African love grass, weeping love grass) had faded to a pale beige making a soft foreground to this collection in the Systematic Beds at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK.

The beautiful form Platanus orientalis f. digitata (oriental plane) is distinguished by its deeply incised leaves. It can become a large and long-lived tree developing wide spreading branches with flaking bark. It makes an excellent specimen tree.

The wiry stems of Symphyotrichum pilosum var. pringlei (white heath aster) are still spangled with flowers. The white star-like blooms provided a display contrasting with the upright stems Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass) and threading through the horizontal seed heads of Crocosmia.

A last piece of late autumn colour provided by the small leaves of Berberis thunbergii 'Green Carpet' (Thunberg barberry). This deciduous, spreading shrub has small, yellow bell-shaped flowers in May, followed by red berries.

At the Beth Chatto Garden, Essex, UK, the whorls of needles of Pseudolarix amabilis (golden larch, false larch) are turning golden-yellow. This deciduous conifer is a monotypic genus producing a medium-sized tree and needing neutral or acidic soil conditions.

Nerine bowdenii (Bowden lily) always seem a special treat when their flowers appear in the autumn! This summer-dormant, South African perennial bulb has pink flowers in various shades and there are white cultivars. The plants require a free draining soil.
