In this book we find out the things that make Sheldon who he is. His determination - his willingness to do whatever it takes to avenge his father - and his love for family. Stop what you’re doing and find a way to add these two books to your list. I read Norwegian by Night last year and just finished American by Day by Derek B. Miller. “Sigrid’s brother Marcus has gone quiet while living in America. She’s a police Chief Inspector in Oslo and takes leave to travel from Norway to upstate New York. There she finds he is wanted in the death of a professor. He was heard confessing and she is the aunt of a young, black 12-year-old boy who was shot while playing in his front yard. With the help of a Jesuit sheriff, Sigrid wants to find Marcus and find the truth before SWAT teams gun him down. All while navigating this strange place called America.” Miller has combined crime fiction, humor and social issues into a wonderful novel. He makes great observations about race relations and the politization of criminal investigation. He does it with great insight and humor. There is tragedy and there are people building bridges. The Sheriff’s talk at the end says a lot. Norwegian by Night by Derek Miller was on my wishlist for a long time before I finally found a hardcover edition. “Sheldon Horowitz is a Jewish watchmaker and Korean War veteran. He moves to Oslo, Norway 🇳🇴 to live with his granddaughter (that he and his wife raised) He is wracked with guilt over feeling responsible for his son’s death in Vietnam. In Oslo he witnesses a horrific murder while he shelters a young boy. Sheldon feels a strong urge to protect and hide the boy and he sets out...into a country he doesn’t know and a language he doesn’t speak.” The story moves around in time - from Sheldon’s memories of war and dreams of his son to him working out how to keep the boy safe. Sheldon told his family he was a clerk, but he was actually a Marine sniper - skills that come in handy to protect the boy and his family. Miller raises some interesting questions about immigration and patriotism. And how no one is ever too old to stand up for what is right.
