in the spirit of getting off the subscription service teat and back to buying music as directly from the artist as possible, here are some albums from proper indie artists who've dropped absolute bangers this autumn

castle rat, "the bestiary." what if, and hear me out here, black sabbath with frank fazetta aesthetics and an absolute commitment to the cheap and earnest VHS fantasy vibe? like, seriously, your hot friend with a thing for rats and four of her friends got their LARP gear on and went to the woods and also death is there and she's a lesbian with a rat skull. backed this on kickstarter and, no word of a lie, i was backer #666.

lola blanc, "crowd pleaser." lola's always had a sardonic, critical vibe even when she was doing fairly played-straight love songs. this is where she was going from those. this album is fucking savage. nobody is safe. the rich, the powerful, the vacuous, the self-obsessed, and all the associated travails of life under late capitalism. also, catchy as fuck. defy you not to have 'everybody' on the brain forever.

desmond doom, "bats on the beach." pitch-perfect post-punk with an australian surfer's lack of giving a fuck. just good music, played well, by a bloke with a sense of humour about it all. solid bops. he also does a nice line in parodies on his youtube but that ain't what we're linkin' to today.

golden salt's debut, "barock." what if she was a classically trained violinist and she was a rock guitarist and drummer and you were both gorgeous italian women and, more to the point, absolutely committed to your particular bit?

the protomen. act iii. all hands on deck this is not a drill it's finally fucking happening dear god. take the on-the-surface fairly simple idea of "mega man as a rock opera" and wed it to the best tribute to queen and most damning indictment of complacency, apathy and hero worship walking us into fascism you've ever heard. that's the protomen. they are drip feeding this one out two tracks at a time because they've been edging us for years and why stop now? emily, the shadow, the city, my father, they're all here again and it rips.
