He’s not Nyck de Vries: the racing driver here. He’s barely anyone at all. Across the water, a cow stares at him. Sometimes, he wishes his father had taught him how to take care of the farm animals. As a young boy, he’d get into the neighbours’ farm, hiding in the piles of straw, trying his best to befriend the stray cats, and even though he’d always fail, he didn’t mind. Winning and failure were abstract concepts. He floats in his daydreams for a while, like he usually does, when he’s startled by the sound of a bike bell. He jumps – he’s easily startled, though he could’ve expected the noise. He turns around. Max waves at him, beaming, holding a loaf of bread, fresh strawberries, and cheese in one hand.
