Samantha Reads Comics: Twelve by Twelve #9
Time to see if this Dial H reimagining lives up to th great takes on the concept by Will Pfeifer and China Mieville. I loved the Wonder Twins book from this same imprint, so I’m semi-optimistic

I successfully called the Shazam resemblance! Also love the gimmick here with the "secret origin" washed-out backdrops. Super clever meta stuff. And I think I like the "Heroverse" version of the H-Dial's mythology more than I like what China Mieville did with it.
Quinones does SO MANY art style pastiches and they're ALL bangers. Can't imagine the work he put into this book.

This series was a new all-time winner for me. I love it so, so much, every page of it. I'll be pretty goddamn shocked if something else in this Twelve By Twelve binge tops it.

This is gay Afro-Latino (Puerto Rican) superhero Hero Cruz (who currently only appears in the 19 issues of the 1996 comic title, SUPERBOY AND THE RAVERS--and yes, that's literally his name).
It's a handsome redesign by Luciano Vecchio, featuring both his Achilles Vest & his H-Dial!
I love, love, LOVE the way that Dial H as a concept used to be run. Letting kids from all around the country send in their ideas for heroes and villains and then getting cited in the comics. I’m sure there’s some logistical issue that means it’s not feasible now but goddammit I want it to be!
I need people who don’t read comics to know about Billy Batson’s current roommate Miguel Montez because I love him so much and I need more people to talk about him
Miguel is currently the owner of the H-Dial, a phone that transforms its user into a random superhero for one hour
The hero he transforms the most into is SuperMiguel, his inner hero

I just think there’s so much potential in dynamics with these two 16-17 years old teenagers who can transform into strong flying superheroes, one via a magic word and the other thanks to a magic phone and I really want to see more content from them.
