After turning Five’s record player up, you through yourself onto his bed and rolled onto your stomach. Currently you were in your best friend’s room at the Umbrella Academy after a grueling Monday at school. It is your junior year, and life felt like it couldn’t get any harder.
You looked at Five who was reading some super large book, probably about science or math or something else you thought was boring. You groaned and smacked his arm to gain his attention.
“What was that for?” he asked, sounding uninterested and didn’t even look away from his book.
“You’ve been reading for a while,” you said, “let’s do something fun.”
“Is being in my presence not good enough for you?”
You hit his arm playfully again and this time he looked at you.
“You need to get outside more. Your gonna die of vitamin D deficiency.”
He laughed at what you said and put his book down in his lap.
“Look, I just have a lot of studying to do to figure out this time traveling thing.” Five paused when he saw the sad look on your face and continued with, “but let’s plan something this weekend. Whatever you want to do.”
“Actually, there is something I really want to do,” you said, “prom is coming up this week, and I thought you might want to go since you never had the chance to go to a school dance.”
Five’s heart skipped a beat. A school dance? With the girl he was falling in love with? He looked at you and was about to say yes when you interrupted.
“Look, don’t feel like you have to, I know how you feel about big crowds and cheesy stuff like school dances.”
“No, no,” he said reassuringly, “I want to go. I’d do anything if it was with you.”
You felt your face go red and smiled widely.
“Really?” you exclaimed, “thanks so much, Five!”
You sat up quickly and pulled him into a big hug.
“Anything for you,” Five said.
He knew that this weekend was going to be when his relationship with you was really going to start, or never be the same.
Since you spent practically every second with when you weren’t at school or work, you were very close with his family. Specifically Allison and Klaus. Right now they were helping you get ready for the dance.
“So,” Klaus said as he lounged on his side on Allison’s bed, “tonight’s the night the two love birds are finally going to get together at last.”
“Nothing is going on between Five and I,” you told him, “were just going as friends.”
“Sure,” Allison said from behind you while curling your hair, “and Klaus can’t see dead people.”
“Okay, yeah it’s obvious I like Five, but I know nothings going to happen,” you sighed.
“Who knows,” Klaus said, “prom is a magical night.” He then got up and headed towards the door. “I’m gonna check on our little old man now.”
“All done,” Allison said and spun the chair you were sitting in to see yourself in the mirror.
You smiled at your reflection. You hair was perfectly curled and your makeup looked like it was done by a professional, fake lashes and all.
“Thank you so much, Allison,” you said while hugging her.
“No problem. Now lets get you in your dress!”
Across the academy Five was standing in front of a full-length mirror in one of Diego’s old suits. Diego stood behind him, smiling and clasping his shoulder.
“Looking good, man,” Diego said, “ready for tonight?”
“No,” Five said bluntly, “but there’s nothing I can do about it now.”
“Go back in time?” Klaus joked as he entered the room.
“Ha, ha,” Five said sarcastically.
“Y/N’s almost ready, so let’s get your as down stairs,” Klaus told him.
Five sighed and pulled at his tie.
“Let’s not keep her waiting then.”
Five flashed himself downstairs and sat on the leather couch. He began to let his mind wander: how was he going to tell you about his feelings? Was he confident enough to do it at all? How will you react?
His thoughts were interrupted by heals clicking behind him.
The time traveler stood up and turned around, and when he saw you time seemed to freeze. You were a strapless, floor length, F/C dress. Your hair was perfect, your makeup was perfect, everything about you was perfect.
“You look stunning, Y/N.”
“So do you,” you said sweetly, “now let’s get going all right?”
“All right, let’s go,” he said and held his arm out so you could hook yours with his.
“What a gentlemen,” you laughed.
“Only for you,” he said genuinely, “you don’t mind spatial jumping to the dance do you?”
“As long as no one sees us.”
“Never,” he smirked, then flashed the two of you to a back alley near your school.
“I’ll never get used to that,” you said while shaking your head.
Five laughed and started walking with you towards the school entrance. Once you got inside and into the gym, he immediately hated it. All the teens dancing up on each other to over played pop music was not his thing. He looked over when he heard you sigh beside him.
“Well, this isn’t as magical as I thought it would be,” you complained.
Five frowned and looked down at you.
“What do you want to do?”
“Doughnut run after one dance?” you asked grinning.
Five nodded, grabbed your hand and pulled you towards the dance floor. He didn’t take you that far just towards the outside so you were close to the mass of dancers, but not in the middle of them.
And of course with your luck, a slow song started playing right at this moment: “I Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley.
“Wow,” Five said, “this the cheesiest of the cheesiest.”
“I agree,” you giggled, “but you promised me a dance.”
Five grinned, and confidently he grabbed your hand and pulled you close to him. You put your hand on his shoulder and blushed at his actions.
He spun you around once then pulled you back against him, almost chest to chest. You looked behind him to see a few of your school friends looking at you as if to say, who is that? You just smiled at them and looked back up at your date. Five was already looking at you.
“Who knew you were such a good dancer?” you questioned.
“I know,” he laughed, “I’m so good at swaying.”
You giggled at his response. The song quickly came to an end and you took your hand off of his shoulder and pulled him to the door.
“Time for the real reason we went out tonight,” you joked and Five laughed.
After going a safe distance away, Five transported you to Griddy’s Doughnuts. Five ordered for you since he new your order by heart, and you sat in a both at the corner of the shop.
Once he had the doughnuts, Five sat right next to you and handed you your’s.
“Thanks,” you said, “not just for the doughnut, but for everything.”
Five put down his doughnut and looked you in the eyes.
“Like I always say, anything for you.”
As you looked into his eyes, you realized how genuine he was; you could tell how much he meant it. Five was close with a lot of people, and his past trauma has made it hard for him to share his feelings.
In that moment, you realized how naive you been. Even if Five didn’t think of you as more than a friend, you could tell you meant a lot. And he meant the world to you.
Five saw the same thing in your eyes. He could see the same love he felt for you that has been bottled up for so long. And he decided that he couldn’t hold it in any longer.
So he kissed you. With everything he had him. All the love, frustration, sadness; every emotion that he went through in your now ruined friendship.
You were surprised at first, but then you kissed back with as much passion as him. You hummed with happiness and pulled away for breath.
Without much thinking you blurted out, “I’m in love with you, Five.”
“Good,” he said, “because I’m in love with you, too,” then kissed you again.
I guess prom was prom was as magical as you thought.
