No thanks, I don't want to hear about your weird diet. I have this horrible congenital condition where I need to eat food in order to function.

I support my friend on her journey to the body she wants, but after 5 years of weight loss she has some loose skin that she finds disgusting. Doc said her insurance would cover removal.
Im happy for her, but she kind of went on about how she's always wanted a flat stomach, that she finds her belly disgusting.
She once told me that I make fat look good.
Thats because fat is good.
Not hers, though. Her fat was disgusting. We all said she didnt need to go from 300 pounds to 180. She was cute when she was chubby. But her fat was disgusting, to her.
So i think about that when im having my usual winter dysphmorphia. I gotta believe the people that said im cute.
The siren song of diet culture is so insidious when you're trying to lose weight for the "right" reasons. Like transfers are easier, dressing me is easier, bathing me is gonna get easier over time, I'll be more likely to get pregnant when I try again... but the like "are you skinnier yet? How do you look?" Questions from both medical professionals and acquaintances really fucking sucks. Like man, I just want an easier life for me and my carers, don't try and twist this into a thing about being Thin.
“If you are someone who let go of the diet mentality a while ago, you may find yourself taking on the fuck you, fuck diet culture, fuck everybody mentality. This can look like dining out with your mother, perhaps your “chief weight stigmatizer” (a term coined by Body Trust Coach Shelby Gordon), noticing that the smoked salmon salad sounds really good for dinner but not wanting to order it because you don’t want to give mom the satisfaction of thinking you made the “better choice,” so you order something you don’t want just to piss her off. This kind of resistance—a choice rooted in protection and opposition versus embodiment—is a necessary phase of healing.”
from Reclaiming Body Trust by Hilary Kenevy, MS, LPC and Dana Stuartevant, MS, RD
Fuck OFF, I have done this exact thing so often!!! I really got stuck in this phase and didn't know how to move forward. Things have gotten a lot better lately. I sent a link to the book to my mom, haha.
This book is a little annoying because while it's insightful and helpful in many ways it's not structured very well. I returned the audiobook to the library and got the ebook instead so I could skim through the repetitive bits and, like, the random poetry I'm not interested in.
normalize blocking people who post about their weight loss.
not because they’re bad people but because you deserve freedom from diet talk.
my ED started like most: with a diet. With “trying to be healthy.” I was primed for it by existing in a culture where diet and weight talk is casual conversation.
but now I protect my health by protecting my relationship with food and my body. Which includes reducing ED triggers, like diet talk, as much as possible.
on less unhinged topics, i'm on a diet. health reasons, really, especially liver and pancreas, and that results in weight loss.
Now i don't mind losing that weight at all, while i never hated my somewhat overweight body (it's just a body, come on), i did hate things rubbing and touching, drives me up the fucking wall.
What i do mind very much is seeing all my expensive vintage clothes become too big on my body and realising that soon i can't wear some of my favourite clothes without having to permanently alter them, but that i have to buy a whole new wardrobe because LIKE THE FUCKING MORON I AM, i tend to self-medicate with 'decluttering' and so I don't have any S-XS clothes fucking leeeeeeeft.
And since i don't ever shop new (aside from underwear), that's a big fucking problem because my beautiful, highly curated wardrobe is a result of years of hunting for specific second hand items, a lot of chance and luck.
This is ass, fellas. Do i like being physically smaller and less of a walking sensory nightmare? Do I like my blood sugar stabilising, cholesterol sorting itself out, and fatty liver becoming less fatty? Yeah. But my clothes! My beautiful clothes!
I love having the nicest, most nonjudgmental cardiologist I could imagine. Whenever people comment on a greasy food like “omg my cardiologist would hateeee me for eating this” I can smugly think “mine wouldn’t, and he is smart enough to know that the occasional greasy meal is a safe and normal part of life for the majority of his patients”
Three months of extreme no-sugar diet and my A1C remained exactly the same; three months of Cheat Summer eating my relatives’ desserts every day and it goes down. I give up!
