Her father and I were astonished when in November, her first grade teacher told us Cori would be repeating first grade the next year because she was too immature for school. When I pressed for a reason, she began listing a string of “behavior problems” Cori was exhibiting: she didn’t listen, stared out the window, ignored instructions, and refused to pay attention. When asked a question, she stared at the ceiling or floor, spoke to herself in a mumble, and sometimes, just stared at the teacher like she didn’t understand. She also tended to talk when she should listen.

Cori had had tubes put in her ears three years earlier, so we knew it wasn’t a hearing issue, but we had her hearing tested anyway. Her hearing was perfect. Overgood, in fact, due to the tubes. I began watching her carefully – and noted a few other things. When Cori attempted to answer a question and got it wrong, or didn’t know the answer, she shut down literally, almost going catatonic. She mumbled, as the teacher mentioned, while reading or doing math. She was twitchy and irritable. And her teacher’s insistence on treating her like a problem child just seemed to make things worse. I was at my wit’s end.

I don’t remember who suggested the special evaluation, but I do know it wasn’t covered by insurance and that it was extremely expensive, especially for a young engineer only eight years into his career with three daughters and a stay-at-home wife. But we managed to find the money and made the appointment.

Having been castigated by the school for my failure to discipline my daughter and “wanting something to be wrong with her,” I was not looking forward to being judged by yet another person with letters behind his name who probably never had one kid, let alone three within five years.

I was given a very thick stack of papers to complete, which covered everything in Cori’s life from conception to what she had for breakfast that morning. I was asked about her personality, her learning style, her relationship with her parents and siblings… and how she dealt with frustration and failure. I dutifully noted my observations, which I had written down in a coherent and logical manner. And I waited for the lecture.

After reading through the documents and spending about two hours with her, the doctor came out and shook my hand. “You really know your daughter well,” he said. “Better than most mothers. And you make excellent observations.”

He had discovered a disconnect between the two halves of Cori’s brain (he called it “central auditory processing delay”, or CAPD), which basically meant the sounds were going in but not getting to the right place in the brain. Thus, the input was not making any sense.

Because of her introverted nature and self-need to be perfect, not understanding what the teacher was saying or asking caused her to physiologically shut down (stare out the window, “ignore” instructions, basically freeze into catatonia). She also could not focus out distractions because of this, hence the not paying attention, especially if there were constant distractions nearby (kids outside, noise in the room). She literally could not pay attention. Like any social kid, she talked to mask her disability.

What the teacher called disobedience – the fidgeting, the catatonic staring, the mumbling (the doctor’s word for that was “subvocalizing”) were all strategies Cori developed to cope. Staring at the ceiling or floor was a way to find the answer – not that it would appear there, but so that she could find the right “file” in her brain. Subvocalizing helped her focus out the distractions and figure out the answer. Shutting down was her way of saying, “I’ve had enough and I can’t deal with this anymore.”

The evaluator told me auditory learners have a particularly difficult time with this particular learning disability, which could be just a delay in development, but could also be permanent. It was fairly new, he said, which is why no one suspected it at the school. It didn’t help at all, he said, that someone forced her to change from being a leftie to using her right hand, which I had not noticed. (There goes my mom of the year award.) Our best hope was to change her learning style.

We found a special needs tutor, who worked to teach my little listener to learn by looking. She attended special tutoring sessions (again, all expensive and all out of pocket) three times a week an hour’s drive from home, did therapy exercises at home, and we were given a set of instructions for the teacher: don’t sit her near distractions like the pencil sharpener or the window, don’t ambush her with questions, don’t treat her like a bad kid.

Once Cori realized she really wasn’t at fault, her cheerful and stubborn nature returned, and she was determined to show that teacher how good a kid she was.

Even though the teacher did her best to keep her back, Cori managed to graduate to second grade on time, and had little trouble after that, although it was obvious to anyone who knows about learning styles that she had undergone a radical change. She still had trouble with some subjects, and sometimes found herself mumbling at the ceiling. But, she graduated from high school on time, and earned a certificate as a Certified Nursing Assistant, a job she still works at 12 years later.

Today, as a mother of three young daughters who is also attending nursing school at night, Cori learns best by combining her natural style – auditory – with visual, and though it takes longer and is more strenuous, she does very well.

For me, finding a way to help my little girl overcome a problem and reach her potential was the biggest reward, but I also learned something else. With the praise from that doctor, I learned to trust my instincts as a mom – I looked at that as my “job” – and I am a bit of a control-freak perfectionist myself (maybe Cori didn’t get that from her dad, after all?). I always try to do everything at 150 percent, and being a mom was no different. But when I was surrounded by highly educated “education specialists” telling me I was doing it wrong and I was causing my daughter harm, I began to doubt myself, despite being highly educated and somewhat intelligent myself.
