Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) – Rob Marshall
Memoirs of a Geisha premiered in Tokyo, Japan on 29 November 2005 before its official release in December.
Steven Spielberg had intended to direct the adaptation of Arthur Golden's 1997 novel as his next project after Saving Private Ryan (1998) but by 2002 decided only to produce and Rob Marshall was approached to take over.
Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh (all non-Japanese, which proved to be controversial) were trained in traditional geisha practices before filming began, and while anthropologist Liza Dalby was hired as an advisor, she stated that most of her advice was ignored and called it a "wasted opportunity" to accurately depict geisha society.
Memoirs of a Geisha received mixed reviews when it was released, and mostly negative reviews in Japan (Japanese cultural expert, Peter MacIntosh, who had also been hired as an advisor on the film, stated that "anyone knowledgeable about Japanese culture who saw the film would be appalled). It was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including Best Original Score (John Williams), Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. It received Oscars for Best Cinematography (Dion Beebe), Best Costume Design (Colleen Atwood), and Best Art Direction.
