"Two Investigators Start Inquiry Into Relief Department," Ottawa Citizen. May 1, 1934. Page 1. --- Ontario Government Officials Begin Work Immediately on Arrival Here Today. ---- Two Ontario government investigators arrived in Ottawa this morning to begin an investigation into direct relief expenditures. The investigators were requested by City Council, which passed a motion requesting the Ontario government to send its chief inspector to Ottawa to conduct an inquiry into relief costs here. Council decided that the city also be represented on the investigating committee, but J. A. Ellis, chairman of the direct relief board for Ontario, said that the government would conducts its own inquiry.

The investigators are D. D. Thomson and A. Bosanquet. On their arrival today they visited Mayor P. J. Nolan, Major C. S. Ford, social service commissioner, and G. P. Gordon, commissioner of finance. They will conduct a routine investigation into relief. This will take probably less than two weeks, it was said. Shortly after arriving here they began their work in the city treasurer's department, checking up on vouchers and the system of cashing them.

The Dominion government auditor also is working on the books at relief headquarters, Major C. S. Ford stated. He began his work yesterday, one of his first duties being to go through the stages necessary for obtaining relief. To do this he made application for relief and went through the routine required. He also is making a check of the staff to determine the efficiency of the administration, Major Ford said.

"STRIKE IN VERDUN HELD AS PROTEST," Montreal Gazette. July 19, 1933. Page 3. ---- Men Earning Relief Moneys Want Dole to Be Replaced by Work --- Nearly 250 Verdun men who had been working on municipal jobs to earn the direct relief they had been receiving went on strike yesterday morning as a protest at the delay of officials In keeping their promise of substituting the dole by a programme of municipal improvement works. The locale of the strike was Aqueduct street. where a sewer pipe is being laid whither officials had concentrated all the unemployed. When at nine o'clock 240 men laid down their tools, an equal number took them up and worked throughout the day under police protection. The strikers were quiet and after leaving work walked down to the headquarters of the Verdun Workmen's Association, 4032 Wellington street. Having all the unemployed males of the city in the one spot. Civic officials, under the direction of Chief A. Dubeau, of the Fire and Police Department's, and head of the Verdun Unemployment Relief Commission, were able to check up on them and are acquainted with the strikers as well as with those who were willing to work. The outcome of the strike, in virtue of a decision of the council on Monday night, is that the unemployed who refuse to work when assigned to certain jobs will receive no direct relief from the municipality.
