I'm getting back into writing fanfiction, Tron fanfiction to be exact? Do you have any writing tips? I love how you write and how you structure it as well!
Oh thank you so much!
My biggest tip would be to let the characters live in your mind, if that makes sense. They're not just person-shaped cutouts made of words and ideas and narrative devices -they're people. They're, each in their own way, you. So all the understanding you have of the world, of people, of yourself and others, applies. Why would character A do thing X? Well, why would you?
If you practice this, you'll find you write characters that feel more "real", their motivations and desires more like things that were born from the character itself than something you put on them for the sake of the story.
As for story structure... Most of my stories employ switching POVs and a 3rd person limited format. If you're interested in using this type of structure, I find that it helps to think about whose point of view you show and by extension, whose point of view you don't show. In my own Tron fic, I very deliberately only show the perspectives of Flynn, Clu and Sam. This allows for Tron to become a multi-dimensional character in the story through the multiple sets of eyes he is seen through -a compound image essentially, comprised of conflicting yet complimentary perspectives. Like this, you can show a character's complexity without directly showing their inner dialogue.
Ask yourself who tells your story and who haunts the narrative instead. This will give you clues as to which perspectives are interesting to show or hide. An unreliable narrator doesn't have to lie -in my stories, every narrator is unreliable by grace of being a person.
I'm not sure if this is helpful at all, but I'm hype to hear you're writing Tron stuff! Good luck!
