Thank you for ignoring seat fillers entirely on your gif and photo sets. I do have the stomach to watch ED till them properly gone. I wish there is someone out there who will help editing them out of each episode before posting.

Yeah, seat fillers and characters I dislike (there were many the last time I watched in 2019 who are still there now and my opinion of them ain’t gonna change in the foreseeable 😂) will always be snubbed by me in both my gifs and the episode sets. Just can’t be bothered with them and paying attention to most/any of their dialogue either if can be helped.

The Diva and the Greaser - One works on paper the other gets a bad start

I mentioned in my last post that the real comparison is to be made between Willie and Mutt instead of Short round. Both these characters have a really good concept/archetype to them, they work really well on paper but ultimately are the two most hated in the franchise from what I’ve seen. I want to explore why and defend Mutt a little, he’s not near as bad as people say and really neither is Willie…if you squint.

So your Divas in the jungle-

I’m not here to refute any hate for Willie as I have a similar distaste for her, the absolutely ear piercing preformance takes away from what could be a very interesting character ( albeit far from the best in the franchise). No offense to the actress but my god was she annoying…which is what she’s supposed to be in the role but she was just a tad too much to the point she was to the audience.

Now the concept behind her is great! Take a stuck up, spoiled and gold digging show girl and drag her on an adventure through the jungle. Watch how she stands out. How she freaks out. How she screams and pouts and growls! That’s hilarious! Any fish out of water story where a pampered character gets dirt on them and a bit of grit is a fun time. A unwilling Indy girl who absolutely despises him yet can’t get away do to circumstance? Hello?!

I’ll also admit that in certain points in the film this great concept shines through. I love the scene with her and Indy being so stubborn neither go to the other and they just lie there complaining! That’s funny! Same with her chipping a nail and “I hate water, I hate getting wet and I hate you!!” “Good!” The anti-tension is so great, mutual loathing is fun. There’s these little moments , where her performance is subtler and the concept shines through…. It’s a shame that her screaming through the rest of the movie makes you forget that.

So your greaser has a heart-

I think Mutt is another great example of a character that’s fantastic on paper, and regardless I’d what you think of Shia he did a great job at portraying that. The bad is low… just don’t scream the whole time and be annoying. It is a real shame that this is the movie he appears in first, as that’s just not fair to him- the worst received of the films but he’s a great part of it (really the family dynamic is the star of the movie).

The concept behind him is also great. We see this kid who has a mountain of his own issues, who hides behind being a cool and slick gang member. He’s a tough guy, he don’t feel nothin’, don’t mess with him. As it goes on we see he’s quite the intelligent kid who likes to learn and knows more than he wants you to think. He’s a big ol’ softie and a mamas boy at heart. Kids brought out into the middle of the jungle only to find the man he loved and lost as a father is a step father and his real one was never in his life before now— that his mother never told him and things are complicated. Is he a bit of a well worn trope of “tough guys a softie”? Sure but I like the Not-so-twist- reveal of him being Indy’s son and the fallout that comes from that.

He’s a acknowledgement of the past- these things happened, there’s consequences (in this case its more unexpected pregnancy but you get what I’m saying). And the future. A gutsy kid to tell you that things aren’t over yet, giving the old man a boost back into adventure and reminding him of who he is.

Overall-

I think they’re both interesting examples of a character that’s a good idea but hit with bad luck. Either a annoyingly overdone performance or a weaker starting movie (mixed with actor irl drama I’m yet to understand). It’s a shame because Willie could’ve been great and Mutt was great but actor drama ruined his chances at a return.

Oh boy...disliked characters oh people will not like me for this but

I don't like Reborn, he beats up Tsuna even though it's "to encourage him" and generally insults people often, i also hate how he treats Skull and also Lambo whose literally a child ycgugxjg idk even with his character development and his past I could never like him even though he's supposed to be important

ohhh people disliking Reborn was what got me started on all this bc I just want people to be able to dislike characters without getting shit for it so this is a safe space anon!!

I personally do like Reborn (think he’s haha funny sometimes lol) but it’s clear as day to me why some people don’t. bc he does constantly attack his student/s. he does constantly berate and attack a child, and his colleagues. and he’s overbearing and pushy and all kinds of other crap. it’s okay that you dislike him!! I’m not really sure he was ever actually written to be a likeable character, anyway. I think he has his charm but he’s very rough around the edges

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*Yes! I’m rather into crack ships, to be perfectly honest. I wouldn’t say that I hated the ships, but they definitely weren’t ships that I read at all. Some of those ships that I perused were Theon/Sansa, Bran/Tommen, Stannis/Asha/Cersei/Davos, and Lyanna/Jaime.

9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?Ramsey Snow. I don’t believe he deserves any of my attention. He’s just despicable. I get that it’s not entirely his fault because he’s got terrible parents. But I find Roose to be a lot more tolerable. That may be due to one great fic, though.

15. Unpopular opinion about the manga/show?You’re going to have to be more specific. I think that a solid 99.9% of my opinions are unpopular. Right now, the biggest one that’s coming to mind is that the characters (and probably also the plot) of the show are 100% different from the books. If you’re going to ask me about a character, you’ll have to specify which you’re talking about.

Question as a writer how do you deal with dynamics involving characters you don't like but are important to other characters without letting your bias affect you? Example: I don't like Dick but its hard to avoid writing him ro reading fics about him due to his importantace to the Batfam. Do you ever have that problem?

Yes, I have had that problem. 

Number one thing is to be aware of your biases. It’s all well and good to use fic to vent and call out canon on its bullshit, but you have to make sure it’s not an avenue to character bash and let your favorites come out completely clean. 

This is harder if you just do not like anything about the character, for sure. If it’s just a character you don’t like for whatever reason, you just have to work that little bit harder to make sure your personal bias isn’t showing and that your characters who canonically love this character still do even if you personal don’t give a crap if they fell off a cliff. The thing with writing characters is that a lot of them will hold views that you don’t, and you have to reconcile that when writing them, especially from their POV. Treat characters you don’t like the same way. It can also take the emotion out if you approach it this way with a character that you have a bit more of a visceral reaction to, which I find helpful. 

Certain stories are easier to navigate. If you don’t like Dick, park him in Bludhaven or the Titans for the time that your fic takes place maybe, so you don’t actually have to write him. If you can’t stand Jason, he’s off on an international case with the Outlaws. There are clean ways to remove a character from the story you want to tell. You can still reference them, if other characters need to, but it might take the pressure off writing them in a fic that doesn’t need them. 

If, however, you have a character and it’s more like ‘I hate everything that’s happened to this character since xxx’ that’s easier in some ways, harder in others. You can ignore the canon and write the character as they were when you did like them. Talia pre-Morrison, Tim from the 90s, Jason excluding new 52, etc etc. You might have to reference some of the canon events, but you can still write the character from back when you still liked them. This can take a bit of time to work out how to resolve, but it’s worth it because then you’re kind of ‘good’ with that character from then on. This is basically what I had to do with Tim, along with copious amounts of ignoring his various fanon incarnations.

What? Uh...No. Fictional characters are usually the only people you're allowed to actually hate. Real life people have feelings. Allow people to hate fictional characters.

I used to disallow myself from expressing my fandom dislikes and character-hatred. It was a very repressed existence. Hating characters shouldn't be your whole fandom activity. But i learned important things about myself, by acknowledging my real feelings. And that includes examining my anti-ideals, as represented by characters i hate.

I never liked kyoko…simply because her overall relevance as a character is so null imo. She just fades further into the background when friendship takes more important matters and she’s just There. Overall, I get a little depressed whenever I think about kyoko bc I remember just how much authors hate writing female characters 😭

it makes me so sad that Kyoko (and Haru to some lesser degree) just became.... background noise to support her “love interest” (is he even lol....) and just a maid it’s fifhhfulgck she’s not even in the last arcs or anything it’s SO,,,, FUCK
