Bobby wants him to go to therapy. An ultimatum, before he can come back to work. He suggests going to see Dr. Wells again, since she was so helpful the first time around, and Buck can’t explain the pit in his stomach. Maybe that’s why he blows up during dinner, as if barbed words could cause the same amount of hurt that ruined his leg. But Bobby doesn’t back down. He levels Buck with a disappointed not quite glare, and Buck is suddenly 12 again. He’s sitting on the Buckley family couch and Phillip Buckley is looming overhead, insisting he still needs a babysitter despite Evan’s protests.

this is inspired by @hersilentlanguage's awesome and amazing tattoo/flower shop au. i guess this could be considered a prequel, since marlos doesn't actually make an appearance. that being said, i had an absolute blast writing this (and i might write a follow up 👀). thank you so so much sparrow for giving me the go ahead to write this!!

Six Feet Under

It was a beautiful service.

Evie even arranged each bouquet herself, ensuring that both the reception hall and the chapel were overflowing with flowers, flooded by life.

After all, death is a kind of rebirth; and her mother always spoke of making oneself anew and more beautiful than before. That was her duty to the world, to make it more beautiful. Evie was sure to include that in her tearful eulogy.

Moth-Eaten Blankets and White-Knuckled Fists

Mal whips her head to look at Jay. He’s peering out the window, keeping watch, although it’s Mal’s rotation. Jay never lets any of them do guard duty alone, it’s a miracle he manages to get any amount of sleep at all. She glances over at their hideout’s ratty cot. Evie and Carlos are both asleep, cuddled up close beneath a moth-eaten blanket.

Their hideout is untouched by the rest of the Isle. Within these walls, they’re free.

Stolen Cigarettes and Overgrown Vines

Statistically speaking, he was probably an accident. There’s limited birth control on the Isle and Cruella has always been a little crazy, but sometimes Carlos thinks she got pregnant on purpose. If only to have a servant underfoot. From the moment he could stand, Carlos had a rag in his hand and a chores list he had yet learned to read. His earliest memories are clumsily mopping up the floor and trying to dust shelves he couldn’t reach.

Mal thinks back to the night before they were taken to Auradon. Jay said it’d be the smart thing to do. He had seemed so sure of himself. So certain that staying on the Isle and hiding from their parents for the rest of their lives would be so much better than whatever Auradon had to offer. Mal should’ve listened when she had the chance.

Evie pries her eyes open, slowly and one at a time, sitting before her is not a wolf but a boy. He’s small and drenched to the bone, like a kitten mewling in a storm. His face is shoved into the crook of his elbow and the moonlight casts a halo around his head. It’s ghostly and holy and Evie isn’t sure if it’s real.

Leather Cuffs and Street Corners

He remembers stealing them off a pirate by Ursula’s Fish and Chips, someone who was basically Goliath but just drunk enough to make the lift possible. As far as he could tell the cuffs were genuine leather, unscuffed and still supple. He remembers presenting them to his father. How Jafar didn’t take them away, but instead grabbed Jay’s arms and tightened the leather cuffs around his wrists. It felt like winning.
