Steel Forge
Painted commission for a friend back in 2020 of their Dungeons and Dragons giant character hard at work forging armor. PEAK COVID. This was a huge undertaking for me at the time. I really didn't know what I was doing background wise. Nor with perspective. Safe to say that I tried my hardest and I think it came out great with the skills I had at the time.
Some old art from my Stormkings game! We had been through a tpk right before this where Nara, the order cleric feeling sole responsibility for her failure to support the team, blew a magic conch that sent her directly to the home of the storm giant king. Alone. (Some spoilers, but the full story) To back up, out party was very hurt while traversing through Deadstone Cleft in search of another conch or allyship from Thane Kayalithica. We ere being attacked by stone giants left and right, and before resting, we stumbled into the lair of Thane Kayalithica herself, clearly crazed with power and entirely unwilling to show mercy to us. We fought, our genasi oath of compassion paladin of ilmater, Torri (She's actually my banner!), was killed and tossed into a petrifying mud, and our blood archer Rhyle was petrified onto her jewelry as well in a series of terrible saving throws. It was just our firbolg mercy monk Dandelion and her. They were badly hurt, Nara was out of spell slots. She felt she couldn't leave, but Dandelion affirmed he could escape, and she was confident in his ability to run. She felt like a coward, but took a Magic Conch (we were searching for more because only one person could use each conch), and blew it before arriving to the storm giant kings home, currently without its king. Upon teleporting there, she could hear music and joy upstairs, sickening after what had just happened. She planned to cast sending in the morning to call for Dandelion, and to go from there, but right then she needed to regain her strength. There was a room for small folk closeby, full of beds lined up that almost planned for their arrival.
She slept with her back to the beds, knowing who couldn't be there with her and knowing no one would hear her cry tonight. She didn't allow herself emotion for others, didn't say she loved her friends enough because she feared it would make them act irrationally to not keep themelves safe. When she woke up in the morning, there was no response to her call. She was the only person left as Thane Kayalithica had closed in on Dandelion back in Deadstone Cleft, and killed him as she did the others. She was not used to having been alone for such a long time. Even at her home she was happily married. How had it all gone so wrong... ---- For those wondering, She made a plan, contacted Zephyros, an allied Cloud giant who was crazy, but god was he reliable and fast. She went up to the Storm giants, found someone willing to help, a storm giant knight called Nimir, who brang her to King Hekaton's brother. He saw her determination and her honestly as she spoke, learned of her story as he had the power to read her mind. She had nothing to lose but to be entirely truthful to him, and was good on his word in helping her get her friends back. They along with a knight and mercs brought from waterdeep (because Zephyros came in clutch and got this group over to Deadstone Cleft in less than a week that would've taken likely a month or two with their current transport) went back to the Thane and slew her, bringing back her friends. Though, understanding her failing, only Dandelion stayed to stick by her side where the others went home. King Hekaton's brother did good in helping Nara, because we ended up saving King Hekaton *twice* from death as well as her bringing Queen Neri back as well to help the kingdoms family. <3
