I can remember the day like it was yesterday rather than 6+ years ago when I realized I was a fraud.
Here I was running health and fitness retreats and writing about health and nutrition and I was a full-blown, bag of Doritos a night food addict. I was telling others how to eat better, reduce stress, exercise, and take care of themselves while I myself was doing none of those things.
I was closing the curtains and hiding and eating. I was buying food and eating it in the privacy of my car where I could toss the bags and wrappers and no one would be the wiser.
I was basically asking people to “do as I say,” but asking them to ignore what I was doing. Hell, I was flat out hiding what I was doing.
After years of abstinence, I fell into remission, a hole that I still work to find my way out of. The difference is that today I don’t hide the fact that I am a food addict. I own where I am successful and where I struggle. I take to heart the adage that we are only as sick as our secrets.
I also try very hard to own my character defects and those areas of behavior that I struggle with. And I think this heightened sense of acknowledgement has made me hyper-aware of times I myself and others around me ask others to act in a certain way while they themselves don’t take their own advice.
I am, in fact, becoming dangerously close to militant and obsessive over the way people seem to attack or condone behavior based not on the act or acts themselves but on the person doing them.
The way they rail against misbehavior of one person while committing that VERY behavior themselves. Then, when you point it out, they justify it by saying that the other person’s action brought it on themselves.
Is it me, or does that sound an awful like my toddler’s retort of “he started it first”?
Here’s what I do know and what I work very hard for every day, not just with myself but with those I love and the larger world outside of me—If we hold ourselves to the same exact standards we hold others to, this would, I truly believe, be a much different world.
