My sibo Maxi head is painted! It came out a little darker and stronger than I wanted but the vinyl was darker than a lot of kits (apparently) and a weird grey-pink color I had to neutralize to start with 🫠. I was going for a hybrid dolly realism + antique doll aesthetic, since I want her to be a little older than the intended age of the kit. Very nice resin eyes from an Et.sy seller in Oregon.

Now onto rooting.... After I rest my hands for a bit 😅

hey clown keepers! i found this little guy at a shop, have been considering taking em in. any idea on the breed & care?

i've heard of the breeds but am still relatively new to clown care. markings seem relatively reserved. their plumage reminds me of Mardi Gras.

This is Helena.

Helena's mere existence upsets some of my friends. She's creepy as hell and I love her.

She's literally the cheapest BJD I could find that was clearly not a recast. She's the Bobobie 50cm body, so she's a weird size (between SD and MSD), and she was sculpted by their apprentice or intern or something and she's very bizarrely constructed. Notably, she's got sculpted abdominal muscles that are just in completely the wrong position. I think the doll/face combo is the Bobobie Lotus, but I've had her for enough years that I've actually forgotten.

I got her because I thought I'd enjoy sewing doll clothes a whole lot more than I actually do. She's also annoying to sew for because she's got some new anime plot-proportioned chest going on and sewing tiny princess seams and getting them to match is tedious. It does turn out that I like knitting doll clothes quite a bit. She's in her summertime outfit right now, so her little sweater tights that I made her are in storage, but back when I could knit I frequently tested new knitting patterns on her.

Her faceup's just stock and I think it's pretty enough that I'll probably never try to do one on my own. If you ordered this doll with "yes faceup" selected, there were two different faceups that it might have randomly shipped with, and I had the good luck of getting the really pretty one. The other option was...not as nice.

I've never found shoes that fit her feet, so she alternates between being barefoot and wearing the slippers that I knitted her. Since it turns out that I don't really enjoy sewing doll clothes, she just has a winter outfit and a summer outfit and gets changed twice a year.

And her jointed hands look super cool, but they're actually a nightmare. Every time that I move her, I have to make sure to put her fingers back into line, or else she'll be sitting on her shelf with her thumbs on backwards or something else that's even more a state of uncanny horror than her default state.

I love Helena, and I think she's probably the ideal BJD to fit my personality and the level of dedication that I'm ready to give to the BJD hobby in general. However, I don't actually recommend anyone actually buy this model, since it's really objectively quite terrible, difficult to find clothing and accessories for, and looks strange in any kind of group setting. There's much better options out there for a comparable amount of money. I don't think the body is even available anymore.

But I absolutely love having a creepy doll that chills above my printer and stares out at the world with an expression that is just slightly too interested for everyone's comfort.

Found a picture from right after I got her that shows off her strange proportions a little bit better. I'm not going to post doll nudity here, but this little 3-minute dress that I made her is a little better of a example.
