Based in Napa, PerUs is an ultra-premium, low-production winery whose wines have been made by the talented Russell Bevan since its inaugural 2013 vintage. Better still, the fruit used for the wines comes from top-notch vineyards in Oakville (Screaming Eagle shares a fence line), Atlas Peak, and Sugar Loaf Mountain. . Recently, I was fortunate to taste both the 2016 Alessio and the 2016 Janeen as the sun set on a gorgeous spring day! Alessio is a Bordeaux blend consisting of 50% Merlot, and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Enticing aromatics of blackberry, currant, tobacco and baking spices emanated from the glass! Seconds later, layered, opulent, sexy Napa fruit coated my palate. The ripe, primary fruit was balanced by surprisingly firm tannic structure. This wine showed even better the next day (pic 2) and, while drinking beautifully now, should continue to improve over the next 10-15 years. . Janeen contains 90% Cabernet Sauvignon (from Atlas Peak) and 10% Cabernet Franc (from Sugar Loaf Mountain). Despite consisting exclusively of mountain fruit, the Janeen was surprisingly elegant and refined. This wine opened up more quickly than the Alessio and also had more acidity, likely due to the higher percentage of fruit from high-elevation vineyards with cooler night-time temperatures. .
