Hello, I am an autistic person who is writing a novel in Microsoft Word for no reason. I never had a disabled protagonist before, and I want it to be a story in which any neurodivergent person can relate to the protagonist, but I want them to be autistic. Is there any good way of writing my character autistic without explicitly saying it but at the same time making it feel like I'm not pandering to one group only? (Also, sorry for my wording. I 100% read the rules before asking)
Hi asker,
The thing about neurodivergence is that it is such a broad category that you will not be able to get every single person in said category to relate to your character just by writing a 'neurodivergent' character. And this is fine – if I write a character who is a woman, for example, which is another very broad category, not everyone who is a woman will relate to her. And, honestly, not even all autistic people will relate to an autistic character, even when explicitly stated as autistic.
We've reblogged a masterpost that has some information and advice on writing a character who is autistic without necessarily explicitly saying they are, whether it's because the character doesn't know, the term doesn't exist in their world, or whatever other reason. Here is the link to the 'hinting' section specifically.
I will ask you why you don't want to be seen as 'pandering,' and what exactly you mean by pandering, so you yourself can think about this word. "Pandering" means, generally speaking "catering to or profiting from other people's others unreasonableness or weakness," and writing an autistic or otherwise disabled character, whether that character is explicitly autistic or not, does not automatically mean it is pandering.
You can write a character who's explicitly autistic and it doesn't have to be pandering. As you know, since you're autistic, people are autistic in real life! And they live their lives every day. You can write about them because they exist. Writing about things and people that exist isn't pandering.
It's also okay to have a specific target audience. If the target audience is autistic people, that's fine. If the target audience is a broader audience of 'readers willing to engage with disabled characters,' that's fine too.
Just know that it is not pandering, and I hope the masterposts linked will help you on the writing side of things; they are quite well put already and I don't think I could phrase them better myself.
Hope this helps,

"Wow…who ARE you?" - 💙💨
"Who am I?? I should be asking you that! How are you keeping up?!"
So, Jevin. How have you been doing. I know you're not my Jevin because you're not human like me, but..How have you been doing?

"Hello, Gray. I've been--..."
He paused. How is he doing? He'd been trying to distract himself a lot lately. It's why he started the blog to begin with. Talked with other people, especially those not from his world. Worlds where, even for a little bit, it seemed better. Even if that wasn't actually the case. But honestly..?
"... having a hard time. Don't concern yourself with me, though. How are you?"
Even when being honest, he'd rather talk about literally anyone else.
Dearest Affogato Cookie, I am writing a fanfic of you having dementia and making you not wanna remember your past despite your curiosities. Also, for some reason, Earl Grey Cookie is your husband.

"But it's good to know i'm popular enough to have books written about me!"
