welcome to part 2 of the dorm living series! (part one is here) in this segment, we discuss the weird and wonderful world of living on top of dozens of your peers. lots of people have never had to live so closely with so many people and so little adult supervision, and there’s definitely a learning curve. here are some tips to make your transition to communal living go a little smoother.

be considerate in common spaces! don’t leave dishes in the sink, don’t hog the dryer, don’t leave your hair in the shower drain. by second semester, people will know what your dishes and your hair and your underwear look like, and they will know it was you.

be cool to your maintenance staff! find out their names, say hello and thank you when you see them, stop and chat if you can. they work super hard cleaning up everybody’s nasty messes and they are people too.

befriend your RA! RAs are not the enemy (the administration is the enemy! remember that!) and they can be a great resource. as older students they have a ton of useful experience and insider advice about your school that they can share with you. more importantly they also are the foremost experts in getting away with stuff and what rules you can and cannot break. (my freshman RA was a kickass aspiring cia agent who, when I ended up alone in the dorms during spring break, let me use her tv and cuddle her illegal rabbit.)

be aware of noise! cinderblock is slightly less soundproof than paper. your nextdoor neighbors can hear your alarm every time you snooze it, and they hate it. try not to do anything loud late at night or early in the morning on weekdays. on weekends all noise bets are off and i regret to inform you that if you try to control weekend noise, YOU are probably being the jerk.

don’t set off the fire alarm! figure out how sensitive your smoke detectors are, and don’t fuck with them. i’m not going to tell you not to light a candle/make microwave popcorn/straighten your hair/whatever, but for the love of god don’t do any of those things right under a smoke alarm. also, the perfect time to cook a bag of popcorn without burning it is 2 minutes and 40 seconds. you’re welcome.

in conclusion: i said this in part one and i don’t want to be a broken record but DORMS ARE SMALL. you will know everybody’s business and everybody will know your business. especially in a freshman dorm, it’s a close knit and not at all soundproof environment. if everybody makes a commitment not to be a jerk, you’ll make some great friends and have a great time! even if some people are jerks, you will at the very least have some stories that are really hilarious in hindsight.
