Tina Brooks – Minor Move

Minor Move is an album by American hard bop tenor Tina Brooks. It features performances by Brooks, Lee Morgan, Sonny Clark, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey. It was recorded on March 16, 1958, and was the first album Brooks recorded as a leader for the Blue Note label.

The Allmusic review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine awarded the album 4½ stars and stated “It is true that Minor Move is right within the hard bop tradition, but fans of that style will find much to treasure here.”

Jackie Mclean"Bluesnik" 60年代マクリーンのいくつかの作品から、メンバーと匂いで本作をチョイスしてみました。 1961年1月8日、Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ録音。オリジナルは、Blue Note BLP 4067、本盤は東芝EMIからの1991年3月27日発売｢ブルーノートLP最後の復刻  - BLUE NOTE ザ・4000番台コレクション(予約限定盤)｣の第5回、BST 84067。非常に状態が綺麗です。 このシリーズは｢JAZZの音・ウェストレックス3D-Ⅱでカッティング｣で、RVGだが音質に期待。 Shure SC35Cの針を落としてみます。録音評は... 相変わらずのBlue Note、アルトとトランペット主体、リズム・セッションはレンジの狭いスカスカの音質。ベースは弱く、ピアノは硬い。軽くて高音域寄りのバランスで、少々疲れます。 さて、Shure M44-7に替えてみます。尖るかと思いきや、アルトとトランペットは落ち着いて馴染むのは意外。フレッシュなサウンドも合致している感じ。チャンネル・セパレーションや楽器の分解能も素晴らしいですね。リズム・セッションは割りきった方が良いと思います。 それから演奏ですが、皆同じように聴こえてしまうのは私だけ？曲調がソニー・クラークの"Cool Struttin'"に似ているかなぁ。ハバードのトランペットは結構強烈。 Producer - #AlfredLion #JackieMcLean (as) #FreddieHubbard (tp) #KennyDrew (p) #DougWatkins (b) #PeteLaRoca (ds) Recording by #RudyVanGelder Cover Photo by #FrancisWolff Cover Design by #ReidMiles 聴かずにスルーは出来ないこの布陣。 マクリーンの1960年代は、従来の演奏から脱皮を試みようとしていた時期です。本作はその初期の頃なので、従来路線に適度に新鮮味が加わった感じ。なので、｢ブルース族｣と言うタイトル通り全編ブルースのアルバムではあるものの従来のブルースではなく、新しいブルースを模索し提案しているよう。いわゆる、後の新主流派に通じる予感のするアウトしたフレーズを発見することが出来ると。60年代のマクリーンのアルバムの中では、突拍子もない方向にそれほど向かっていない点では、聴きやすいアルバムかと。 トランペットはフレディ・ハバード、もしかしたら本作の主役はハバード？と思ってしまうかも。特有のブライトな音色を存分に発揮したアドリブ、いつもの自信に満ち溢れたプレイ。ハバードの隠れた好演集との評価、同感です。 ピアノはケニー・ドリュー。新しさと泥臭すぎない洗練されたブルース・フィーリングが同居。流暢にチック・コリアのようなフレーズを弾いたかと思うと、次にはベタな4ビート。マイナーなドリューらしからぬモダンなフレーズが現われては消え、鍵盤の上で試行錯誤を繰り返すピアノが興味深いと。 オーソドックスなハード・バップに少しだけ新しい響きが融合、エネルギッシュな演奏が聴き応えのあるアルバムだと。 楽曲はすべてメンバーのオリジナルで、マクリーン作が1-1 "Bluesnik",1-2 "Goin' Way Blues"の2曲、ドリュー作が1-3 "Drew's Blues",2-1 "Cool Green",2-3 "Torchin'"の3曲、ハバード作が2-2 "Blues Function"で、どれも注目の全6曲。 マクリーンの2-1 "Cool Green"は、ケニー・ドリュー自身の1955年録音"Talkin' & Walkin'/ Kenny Drew"で"Minor Blues (Blues in a Cardboard Box)"というタイトルの再演らしく、Dマイナーのブルース進行でキーA♭のイントロとエンディングがつけられていて意外性があって面白い曲のようですよ。 #jazz #fuzey #vinyl #jazzvinyl #vinylcollection #ジャズ #スイングジャーナル #レコード #ビニールレコード *作品を知るとジャズはもっと輝きます。情報くださる先輩諸氏に感謝。 https://www.instagram.com/p/CVoa2dZvoaN/?utm_medium=tumblr

“The Jazz Messengers at The Café Bohemia Volume 1” featuring #HoraceSilver on piano, #ArtBlakey on drums, #HankMobley on tenor, #KennyDurham on trumpet and #DougWatkins on bass. It was recorded on November 23, 1955, at The Café Bohemia, the famous night club in Greenwich Village in New York City and released on Blue Note Records. I’ve had been waiting on @MusicMattersJazz to get Volume 1 and 2 back in stock for some time. I found a blue labeled UA copy a few months ago, but I passed on it because I still listen to both CDs on the Jukebox in my car. I finally found this deep groove West 63rd NYC copy at @mlwl2809 this past Sunday. This album was the first version of The Jazz Messengers on record although some will say the “Live at Birdland” which was recorded the year before with #CliffordBrown and #LouDonaldson was. But Lou Donaldson stated in an interview that Art Blakey paid the announcer Pee Wee Marquette to announce the band in his name. “Minor Move” by #TinaBrooks was recorded on March 16, 1958, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey and it was Brooks first recording as a leader. The session featured Brooks on tenor, #LeeMorgan on trumpet, #SonnyClark on piano, #DougWatkins on bass and #ArtBlakey on drums. This was Brooks first time as a leader. Although this session was recorded in 1958 it was shelved for some reason until 1980 when it was released in Japan. The funny thing about this album for me is while I was living in Okinawa, Japan I purchased “True Blue” around the fall of 1981 and saw this album in the Tina Brooks section, but I was kind if thrown off by the picture of a cat on the front cover and passed on it. I did have them play side 1 in the record store one afternoon, but I decided to purchase something else. The CD in my collection is what I had until @BlueNoteRecords released this current copy I have in their #TonePoet Series. This session has an all-star cast featuring a then 19-year-old Lee Morgan teamed up with Brooks to form an awesome frontline. My favorite tune on this album is “Nutville” that at first, I thought was the same tune as the “Nutville” on #HoraceSilver “The Cape Verdean” album and its up-tempo Latin flavor, but this Brooks’ composition sounds nothing like it. As the liner note states, “In 1958 Lee Morgan was in his “Bull Ring” period, a time when everything he played seemed about to burst into a fanfare.” And he was in top form for this session. I still wonder why I didn’t purchase this album when I had the chance back in 1981 as I read over the liner notes it dawned on me that at the time of that first Japanese pressing everyone except for Art Blakey had passed before their 43rd birthday. With Morgan, Watkins and Clark passing away tragically and Brooks plagued throughout his adult life from a heroin dependency and his health gradually deteriorating, he eventually passed away from liver cancer at the age of 42. “Saxophone Colossus” by the great #SonnyRollins was recorded on June 22, 1956, at the Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey featuring Sonny on tenor, #TommyFlanagan on piano, #DougWatkins on bass and #MaxRoach on drums. This was Sonny’s 6th album as a leader and considered his best known as it was selected in 2017 for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically or artistically significant. This mono reissue is part of the #AnalogueProductions Prestige Series mastered by #KevinGrey and pressed at #QualityRecordPressings. Three of the Five selections on this LP were written by Sonny including “St Thomas” a calypso inspired tune named after Saint Thomas in the Virgin Islands which has become a Jazz Standard. The tune “Strode Rode” is Sonny’s way of paying homage to Strode Lounge in Chicago which played a major role during Sonny’s study period in 1955. “Blue 7” a minor blues piece with solos by all starting with Sonny accompanied by Tommy Flanagan and Doug Watkins steady baseline. This is actually my favorite piece on this classic. This reissue is done superbly which is usually the case when the mastering is done by Kevin Grey. The vinyl is very clean, but I don’t have an original to compare. Just a CD. I’m surprised I didn’t pick this up in Okinawa when I was living over there.
