New Earth: The Original Ending

The cure-them-all denouement at the climax of New Earth was originally quite different...

"Anyway, as Phil wept like a grown man about the budget, Russell H Gardner (for decency's sake, I'm conflating the Welsh) guided me towards a simpler story. Julie would keep asking me to change my set descriptions from "stunningly vast" to "stunningly compact", and Helen [Raynor] would tactfully suggest that explaining the plot at some point would be a positive, and Russell would enthuse away Welshly, demanding more death and destruction, like Neddy Seagoon in a fit of blood-lust. Russell T Davies: Originally, in the very first draft of the script, he came up with a cure for this – and the cure was to kill them all! All the patients got killed! David Tennant: That’s a bit harsh! RTD: It was a bit harsh! And then I read, um… Steven Moffat marvelously wrote an introduction in the Doctor Who script book, and he said – just as a joke, he sort of said, “Ooh, I do like those Russell T Davies scripts. He invents interesting characters and then melts them!” [laughs] And I read that, and I thought–– DT: [laughing] "I’ll show him!" RTD: D’you know – no, actually, seriously, I thought, “He’s got a point there; I do love slaughtering them all at the end!” And I went back and read this and I thought, “Oh, that’s horrible, actually!” It was sort of “nicely” written, so that you’d “set them free” and it was “their only form of release” and blahblahblah… […] Phil Collinson: And they all died, everyone died. RTD: It was grim. PC: It was bleak. RTD: And then the Face of Boe died! PC: Yes! RTD: And then Cassandra dies! It was like… it was like [Sam] Peckinpah! It suddenly turned into Peckinpah in the last five minutes! I must have been in a very bad mood. PC: I think you were. RTD: I think I was, actually. What was necessary to save everybody and save the world was to kill all these poor people. And it felt incredibly harsh - I remember getting to that bit and realizing they were all going to die. As a viewer you feel repulsed by them, but you also feel terribly sorry for them. They're more like children than adults, just strange, caged people who don't know what to do with themselves. And so killing them off felt extraordinarily brutal and really caught me by surprise. We had a conversation about it, and Russell must have been thinking along similar lines, because I didn't have to convince him. Why build up a relationship only for it to end offscreen? I know things can happen to actors between seasons and even episodes, but the one offscreen breakup I'm thinking about right now happened in a book series. At the end of book 1 character A and B weren't in a relationship yet but it was obvious they would be. Then book 2 came along and it turned out they not only had a relationship between the two books they also broke up and in book 2 we the readers found ourselves in the aftermath of their relationship and it wasn't pretty. WHY.
