okay buckle up y’all, it’s time for Pokemon Sol and Eridani. the high points of this revised-to-include-Pokemon PHM AU are as follows:

The story starts out on Earth in the Pokemon universe, and *roughly* follows the original plotline of PHM. 

Humans on Earth discover the Petrova line (and later the Astrophage problem affecting the sun). 

Petrova had been initially alerted to the anomaly by her companion Pokemon. In this universe, Petrova had been a bit of an eccentric in her field for crediting her Gardevoir as an equal co-researcher in her work. However, when Petrova published her findings re: the Petrova line, it was made clear that (in some way) the involvement of Pokemon while investigating this phenomenon was crucial. An initial hypothesis is made that Psychic-type Pokemon have some kind of unique advantage in detecting or observing Astrophage. 

It isn’t Grace at the forefront of Astrophage research; it’s a team of other human scientists and their Pokemon, pulled into the Petrova Taskforce by Eva Stratt, who had been chief administrator for the Earth space agency that had the most experience with integrating Pokemon into its operations, before she was tapped for the Taskforce. 

Project Hail Mary gets greenlit. The plan is to send an international crew of three humans and four Pokemon on a one-way trip to Tau Ceti. The humans will be in comas for the trip, while two of the Pokemon will be in regular long-term storage Pokeballs. The other two Pokemon will be in *highly*-modified special Pokeballs, programmed to automatically let them out once the ship reaches Tau Ceti. 

The primary crew comes together: a Chinese pilot and their Pokemon Yao, a Russian engineer and their Pokemon Ilyukhina, an American scientist and their Pokemon Shapiro, and an independent Mew (who don’t need no trainer) named Ortiz. Yao and Ilyukhina are probably both Pokemon who can survive in space?? (Is that a thing?? I’m gonna say that in this story, that’s a thing.) A backup crew is also assembled, with the backup scientist’s Pokemon being named DuBois. Shapiro and Ortiz will be the two Pokemon to wake early and oversee safely waking/releasing the rest of the crew. 

When the Astrophage measuring error and resulting disaster happens, it’s not the primary and secondary human scientists who die — it’s the primary human scientist, their pokemon Shapiro, and Ortiz the Mew. 

The revised crew is now Yao and his human pilot, Ilyukhina and her human engineer, and DuBois and his backup-now-primary human scientist, with a gap in the lineup for the fourth Pokemon. 

Stratt considers the problem. She thinks back to a report she had received some months ago, informing her that the initial hypothesis about Petrova’s Gardevoir had been partially correct but incomplete — Gardevoir is a Psychic/Fairy type. Both Psychic Pokemon *and* Fairy Pokemon possess that extra *something* that gives them an advantage in working with Astrophage.

Stratt looks at her own Pokemon, who’d been her closest companion for years, since before the Petrova line was even discovered. Though some of Stratt’s colleagues kept full teams of Pokemon, Stratt had only ever had the one: when she’d first been promoted to administrator of a joint human-Pokemon space agency, she had felt it behooved her to have a Pokemon of her own, so she’d gone to a Pokemon shelter and adopted a spirited and intelligent Fairy-type Jigglypuff who’d been abandoned by his previous trainer. 

Stratt’s Jigglypuff had immediately welcomed and befriended the crew, humans and Pokemon alike. He had gotten bored with watching Stratt sit at a desk for most of the day, and he’d usually wandered off to tag along with DuBois and Shapiro and their trainers and Ortiz as they learned about Astrophage. It had been a blessing to have his assistance as Stratt coordinated with her teams of scientists — she’d talk out her planned meeting agendas in her office in advance, and if she got anything egregiously wrong in the scientific details, her bright little Jigglypuff would squeak at her in admonishment until she went back and re-checked her reports. 

It breaks her heart. But she has to do it.

She asks Grace the Jigglypuff if he would go on the mission, and Grace clearly refuses to go (refuses to leave her). 

That night, Stratt watches as Grace curls up on his little cushion next to her bed to sleep. She wants to pick him up and hold him tight against her heart one last time — but that might wake him up. She can’t risk it. 

She takes out the special Hail Mary pokeball which she’d secretly taken from the locked safe in the primary labs, and calls the sleeping Jigglypuff into it. 

The Hail Mary launches on schedule, with the full crew complement of three humans and four Pokemon aboard. 

Years later, at Tau Ceti, Grace the Jigglypuff wakes up alone and confused. There’s nothing at all wrong with his memory. The last thing he remembers is going to sleep with Eva watching over him. Where is he? Where is Eva??

Even after he gets his bearings, he’s not sure what happened — he guesses maybe somebody on the Project Hail Mary team had abducted him and swapped him into the mission Pokeball without Eva’s knowledge?? This is very very bad. He knew what Eva believed would happen to her once her usefulness to humanity had ended. He was supposed to be there to help her. Now Eva is back on Earth without him, all alone. 

DuBois’s pokeball had malfunctioned, and DuBois is still stuck inside it. He and Ilyukhina and Yao seem to be okay, though, according to the monitoring equipment.

The three human crew members are… much less okay. Very not okay. About as un-okay as it’s possible for a human to get, really. 

Hail Mary current crew member manifest: Grace, Yao, Ilyukhina, DuBois. End manifest. 

(and then blah blah blah Rocky and the Blip-A arrive and so on, but instead of meeting an alien ship with 1 living alien human, he meets an alien ship with 4 living alien Pokemon)

Thanks to Jigglypuff’s musical abilities, Grace finds it a little easier to communicate with Rocky than in canon.

Even without the amnesia, Rocky still gets to be pissed at Stratt here for inflicting uniquely-Eridian-cultural horrors on Grace! Instead of “taking away memories, which shouldn’t be able to even happen to someone”, it’s “she sent you to your death while she was supposed to be watching over and protecting you while you slept”!

And it turns out that Jigglypuff’s ability to sing others to sleep works on Rocky, so Rocky gets to be the first Eridian in Erid’s recorded history to experience having control over his own sleep schedule. 

And since Pokemon (at least in this story) can go into a sort of stasis while in their Pokeballs, all four Pokemon on the Hail Mary can survive the trip to Erid without any issues with food as well.
