Night in the Stone World was never quiet. The forest seemed to breathe, wind rustling through the leaves, branches creaking like old bones, and distant animal calls echoing faintly through the darkness. You had grown used to it, but tonight every sound felt louder than usual. Every snap of a twig, every brush of leaves, reminded you of the danger if you were caught. If Senku’s team noticed, you would be questioned. If Tsukasa’s team caught Gen sneaking out, he could be in serious trouble. And yet, here you were, slipping through the shadows as if you were a phantom.
You neared the clearing where Gen always waited. A sliver of moonlight glinted off his hair, and the faint outline of his figure seemed almost to glow in the darkness. He smiled the moment he saw you, and his shoulders relaxed in a rare display of ease.
“Ah, my nightly miracle has arrived,” he said dramatically.
You rolled your eyes but could not stop yourself from walking straight into his arms. “You’re late,” you murmured against his chest.
“And you’re bold,” he replied, chuckling, “considering you’re hugging someone your precious scientist would probably like to chloroform.”
“Senku doesn’t chloroform people,” you said, frowning slightly.
“No, but he would figure it out scientifically,” Gen said with a shudder, “and then Tsukasa would have a few words for me. Let’s not think about that.”
You did not. Not when his fingers were already tracing gentle patterns along your back. Warmth radiated from him, so different from the cold, manipulative persona he showed the world.
The first mistake came when you returned to Senku’s camp too relaxed. Chrome was the first to notice.
“You look suspiciously happy,” he said, hands on his hips. “Did you find a rare mineral?”
Kohaku crossed her arms and narrowed her eyes. “No, it looks more like she was sparring, or running, or something.”
Senku did not look up from his work, but his voice was sharp. “(Y/N) doesn’t usually disappear for three hours at a time.”
Three hours. You had been gone that long. You forced a weak laugh. “Just went for a walk. Thinking, you know.”
Senku hummed. “Well, try not to get eaten. We need you.” His tone was calm, but you knew he was suspicious.
Gen’s camp was no easier. Tsukasa’s gaze seemed to penetrate through any excuse, quiet but unrelenting.
“You’ve begun taking long strolls at night,” Tsukasa said one afternoon while collecting firewood.
Gen put on his trademark smile. “Ah, the night air is good for inspiration. Gotta keep the mental gears turning.”
“You run into anyone?”
“Just the usual forest creatures. Deer, birds, a squirrel that doesn’t seem afraid of humans anymore.”
Tsukasa gave him a long, sharp look, clearly unconvinced. Hyoga, ever observant, added, “You’re glowing, illusionist. People only glow when they’re hiding something.”
Gen’s grin thinned. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
Despite the danger, you kept meeting. Sneaking, disappearing, failing at subtlety. You were both terrible liars when it came to each other.
When Gen saw you approaching the clearing, his face lit up immediately.
“Well, well, if it isn’t the most beautiful danger to my livelihood,” he said, walking toward you.
“You’re not helping us stay subtle,” you said lightly, though you could not hide your smile.
“You don’t meet your illicit lover in the woods at midnight for subtlety,” he said with mock seriousness.
You should have scolded him properly, but his grin was contagious. He pulled you close and pressed a soft kiss to your forehead.
“Tell me something nice,” he whispered.
“I missed you,” you said, fingers tangling in his coat.
His breath hitched slightly. “Ah, dangerous words.”
“Why?”
“Because I might start thinking I can protect you from the world, and we both know I cannot.”
“You don’t have to. Just be with me,” you replied softly.
He closed his eyes. “You’re going to get me killed.”
“Same,” you said, and he chuckled softly. “Romance at its finest.”
Secrets, however, have a way of unraveling. Kohaku noticed the next time you returned to camp.
“Why do you smile like Gen?” she asked bluntly.
“Like, like Gen? Why would you say that?”
“Every time Gen pulls one of his dumb fake-love smiles, it looks exactly like the one you make when you return from your walks.”
Senku adjusted his goggles, staring at you. “…Interesting.”
Tsukasa noticed as well.
“You’ve been humming,” he said to Gen during training.
“I hum often,” Gen replied defensively.
“You hum like someone in love,” Tsukasa said in a flat tone.
Hyoga tilted his head. “Ah. That explains everything.”
Gen nearly dropped his water gourd. “It explains nothing, thank you.”
It all came to a head one night. You and Gen met as usual in the moonlit clearing. Whispers of affection passed between you. Footsteps approached, too heavy and deliberate to be animals.
“Someone’s coming,” you whispered, grabbing his hand.
Two voices broke the quiet. “(Y/N)?! We’ve been looking everywhere!” Chrome. And “Oh. Gen.” Senku.
You felt your soul leave your body.
Gen froze, stiff as stone.
“Oh boy, this is not ideal,” he whispered.
From behind Gen, Tsukasa’s voice rang smooth and cold. “Well, well.” Hyoga stood beside him, smirking. “How touching, a forbidden nighttime liaison.”
Chrome’s jaw dropped. “Wait, is this, are you two?”
Kohaku leapt from the shadows. “I knew it!”
Senku examined the scene like a strange chemical reaction. “…Huh.”
Tsukasa’s gaze cut between you and Gen. “Gen, you’ve been sneaking out, lying, and compromising our security. And you’ve done it all for someone important to you.”
You blinked. Gen swallowed hard.
“Now, Tsukasa, before you say anything, I—” Gen began.
“Let it be known,” Senku interrupted, “these two are terrible at hiding things.” Chrome whispered, “This is like a shōjo manga!”
Tsukasa sighed, softening slightly. “Only until the war ends.”
“Sure,” Senku said, shrugging. “But until then, let the lovebirds live.”
Gen exhaled. You squeezed his hand. “For once,” he murmured, “I’m guilty of complete honesty.”
The forest seemed to hold its breath around you, tension lingering, but for now, you could exist in each other’s arms, in your own small corner of the Stone World.
“Well,” Gen whispered, forehead against yours, “our secret romance has become a public scandal.”
“At least nobody actually tried to kill us,” you said.
“Yet,” he corrected, smiling softly. “But honestly, my love, you were worth every risk.”
You cupped his cheeks. “Then let’s carve out a place for us in this world.”
He grinned, soft and real. “I suppose,” he said, leaning in, “I should give you my answer.” This time, no one interrupted.
