here i am again, drawing insignificant designs for Dragon Rose!! if you’ve never heard of it, Of Elder Scrolls and Huntsmen: Dragon Rose is a skyrim/rwby crossover fic that is currently at ~815k words (it is very, very long; but also very, very worth reading). i won’t spoil anything, but i will say that there are some really good twists and reveals in this fic that i love. i’ll link it in a reblog if anyone wants to give it a go
If you guys are looking for another Beauty & the Beast retelling to read, I highly recommend Dragon Rose by Christine Pope. It’s an interesting an unique take on the B&B story. It’s great for several reasons:
The “Beast” is in this story is actually very nice from the beginning and the circumstances of her being with him are really the fault of the curse. He really has no choices but for her to be there.
The curse! Omigosh, the curse! The curse in this version is by far the worst I’ve ever seen in a B&B retelling. (Note: we don’t learn about the full extent of the curse until after it is broken)
The real villain of this story (if there is one) is the person who cast the curse (we never actually meet this person but only hear about them in the end when learning about why the “Beast” was cursed)
We get glimpses of what the “Beast” was like before he was cursed and (in addition to what we learn he did to get himself cursed), he totally did not deserve it! The punishment so did not fit the crime.
All in all, it feels less like Stockholm syndrome then most other retellings I’ve seen/read.
Note: This is the first book in a series of various fairy tale retellings, but it isn’t necessary to read them all.
headcanon: Maleficent was a name she chose to use, not what she was born with.
Dragon names are not meant to fit mortal tongues. You’re welcome to try all you like (it’s amusing), but you cannot learn it. The closest Briar Rose ever got was something close to magnificent, and that was on a good day. And because humans are persistent little creatures, she kept on trying. It eventually morphed into Maleficent around the time of the Sleeping Curse, and by that point, Mal’s just... done. Who gives a fuck.
With mal being the Latin root for bad or evil, Rose’s constant mispronunciation sounding like magnificent, why not just combine the two to create Maleficent? A tribute to her old flame-turned-nemesis while being grandiose enough to show anyone with half a brain cell she’s not to be messed with. Because she can turn into a dragon and eat you. or at least, that’s what she wants you to think
