Monday, February 10: Dream Tröll, "A Fairy's Tale"
If Dream Tröll hadn’t made their intentions clear with their name, the album artwork would’ve sealed the deal. That said, “A Fairy’s Tale” didn’t quite offer what its title promised, as it was dramatic but not epic or overly froofy. The riffs were noodly mid-paced Maiden and for the most part the track moved like a fine pastiche of ‘80s trad metal, if a bit slicker and more produced. But the band earned their umlaut with the knowingly ludicrous spoken word passages, which were so clearly there for the sake of generating a chuckle that they nearly derailed the track. Otherwise the vocals were actually a nice changeup from the style employed by most trad metal revivalists, balancing the riffs and drumming with its hook. This wasn’t the sort of thing that was going to change anybody’s opinion about anything, but “A Fairy’s Tale” offered its own quirky pleasures.
