I know it's so distracting when you hear the ping or get a notification or get to a song that you don't want to listen to, but like those commercials say, "All it takes is one second of your eyes off the road to end yours or someone else's life." Wait until you're at a red light (and don't even then, honestly) or until you can pull into a parking spot or on the side of the road to check.

4. Always carry an emergency medical kit in your car, carry tools to change your tires, carry jumper cables, and most importantly, go to Walmart or your nearest store and buy the small tool that's about the size of your palm and in the shape of a "T" that can cut seat-belts and break windows with the glass-breaker tip. If you get into an accident and can't get out, have that in your center console or glove compartment for emergencies.

5. Be calm. Don't freak out on the road, and I know that's easier said than done, but panicking on the road is dangerous for you and others. If you can't be calm while driving, you need someone else behind the wheel until you are.
