This is the chorus of the same song from last week. We learned the verse last week and this week we focused on the chorus. The fill has a combination of 8th notes and 16th notes, also a flam on beat two. For the drum fill this week, we started a new song. I am teaching most of my students the same song with 3 different levels. Each level gets harder. This is level 2. I will eventually have the sheet music and the mp3 on YouTube so anyone can try learning the song with the different beats and fills. For level 2, we worked on a beat with the open hi-hat on the and of beat 4. The fill has 2 8th notes on beat 3 and 2 16ths and an 8th note on beat 4. I wanted keep the fill simple to focus on the open hi-hat and to work on half measure fills. Tanner does a great job demonstrating the fill this week. For the drum fill this week, with some of my more advanced students, we started a new song. This is the Chorus of the song. The drum beat is pretty challenging with lots of grace notes. It is inspired by the great James Brown drummers. The drum fill is two groups of 5 and a group of three. The sticking is RllRL - RllRL - RLR. With some of my students we have been studying the great drumming of Zigaboo Modeliste. This week we learned the beat from the song Look Ka Py Py. Zigaboo has so many amazing grooves that he created.
