A trip to Dublin in September 2022. Always have to visit Cornucopia when in town, which is where we got this croissant. Always made a visit to the Hodges and Figges bookstore, one of the oldest operating in the world. Our visit to the bookstore was during our short stay in Dublin on our way to Dún Laoghaire.

Vegan Big Mac 🍔

We decided to the try the Mac D Lad (vegan version of a Big Mac) and Garlic Parm fries from VFace. The Mac D Lad is made of a Smashed Beyond Patty served on a charcoal bun. And the garlic parm fries is loaded with garlic mayo topped with homemade parmesan and fresh parsley. 

The Mac D Lad burger tastes exactly like the original Big Mac from Mcdonald’s. It seems really crazy to think that the two burger tastes so much like each other but yet are made from completely different ingredients. 

Would highly recommend trying the Mac D Lad from VFace! Would also recommend trying the vegan cookies that they had displayed by the counter.

Vegan Ramen 🍜

Monday afternoon, we wandered off for lunch and was immediately greeted by the friendly staff and incredible aroma of asian food. The restaurant opened at 12pm and when we got there at 1pm the restaurant was already busy. 

We decided to try the vegan ramen from Takara Ramen & Deli Sushi Bar. It consisted of grilled tofu, shiitake mushroom, pak choi, bamboo shoots, sweet corns, spring onion, fungus, corriander and grilled seaweed, in a miso flavoured soup. The ramen tasted amazing and was the perfect comfort food on a cold and tiring day.

We also tried the Takara Yasai Set. The set had 6 vegan rolls, 4 avocado hosomaki, 4 roasted red pepper hosomaki, 2 inari fried tofu nigiri, 1 asparagus nigiri and 1 wakame goma nigiri. The set had a little bit of everything and was  perfect as a sharing platter.

Overall, we loved Takara. Even though this restaurant isn’t a vegan restaurant, we appreciated that the place had vegan options. This place is great for those times when all you want is a bit of comfort food.

Before Margaret grabbed their flight back to Boston we spent half a day in Dublin. The easiest way to travel back to Boston from Belfast is a direct flight from Dublin.

We grabbed a bite from the Tara Street POG which has locations all over Ireland. Their pancake menu is no joke. Apparently they also have a vegan tea option, so we'll definitely need to go back and give that a try.

It was a rainy day so we stopped into the National Gallery of Ireland to have a cup of tea before Margaret's flight. There wasn't enough time to actually see the museum and it was a hard time anyhow given that I knew I wouldn't be seeing Margaret a few months until I could visit Providence after finishing up classes for the term. We're planning to go to Dublin again next month so we'll finally have a chance to see more of the museum.

In September 2019 I headed to Dublin for one of my first visits beyond the airport. I was arriving for a march, but as always the first destination was a vegan spot - Vish Shop. I tried the BBQ Cauliflower Wings and Chips. I can't wait to try their Vish and chips, though it seems now the only place they are serving is from their Veginity location.

I travelled to Dublin to attend the Rally for Choice. I've been following the movement for access to abortion in Ireland from the states for years. I wrote about it for Rewire in 2017 beginning the piece "By now, the stories of people denied access to abortion in Ireland and facing financial, physical, and emotional hardships as a result are likely well known to reproductive rights advocates. Last year, for the first time, one Irish woman took it upon herself to appeal to the United Nations that, in being denied access to a safe and affordable abortion, her human rights were violated by the constitution of her home nation."

Admittedly I didn't understand the difference between the North and South in this advocacy for abortion access in Ireland in 2017. Fast forward to me marching in Dublin, having travelled from Belfast and this it's a different story (for me, anyway) entirely. I even showed up in some news coverage of the rally. That's me in the pink to the right of "The North is Next". Indeed it was, with decriminalization of abortion in Northern Ireland in 2019.

This was my first social justice action after moving, and one of the few I've been able to attend given the lack of actions in person during COVID-19. But I now know about MERJ and Alliance for Choice. I've had the privilege of working with many of these feminist and queer activists. It was a moving march to be a part of it, even though I did go alone.

And then a ride on the Irish Rail back to Belfast.
