Reading Project Hail Mary right now, and honestly I think Grace was the 3rd backup science officer from the moment he tests positive for the coma gene. After he finds out, the very next scene is him testing a collection apparatus in an EVA suit underwater. He's there for every major meeting, he gets to know more about the project then just about anyone. There's no way Eva Stratt, who has redundancy after redundancy, who is trying to plan for every possible problem, wouldn't put the pieces together, wouldn't have the thought enter her mind. I don't think she figured it would ever come to that, but I do think she starts treating Ryland Grace a little more like an astronaut.
