You'll be like "Okay, so now that I have a Whirring Contraption I have to go to Doubt Street and create a Rather Poor Edition of a newspaper to have enough Jade to buy a Human Ribcage, which I will then exchange for Incisive Observations, which I can use to level up my Shifty Students, and then after I graduate 3 more students, I'll finally have a Gifted Student!

I like to think The Shops of the Bazaar, like the special named ones in their own tab where we actually buy from and sell to, are not all in the Side-Streets or up in a rare Emporium.
Have you ever been to one of those places where it's like a giant office highrise, but the first 2-3 floors are a mall? it'd be like that. it would still account for there being streets and alleys there, because those also exist in real life Bazaars in Istanbul or Marrakesh or Tabriz; I could definitely see Nikolas and Sons or Dark & Savage setting up shop in something like that.
Tabriz is actually a phenomenal example, put this place in a cave and you got yourself one Fifth City Echo Bazaar ready to go

The entire process is just one act of self-sabotage after another, all justified with very flimsy reasons that you don't even fully understand. You spend large amounts of resources, intentionally hurt your body, mind and soul, destroy your reputation, cut off your friends and basically do all you can to self-sabotage yourself. It's basically self-sabotage with some supernatural elements added in. The weeping scars are obtained with literal self-harm.
The end goal, of going North, is just suicide. The 2 endings (excluding salt) reflect whether you're angry at the world and want it to burn with you, or sad and just want it to be over. And you get the option to turn back (aborted suicide).
As someone with mental health issues who self-harms, I've found myself resonating with this quest. Maybe I'm projecting but it does feel like this to me.
