Consider Paper Tape and Cellulose Tape for Shipping

As someone who sells a lot of things online, I ship a lot of packages overall. This means that my shop can have a sizable footprint just in the type of packaging that I use to ship my products and goods in.

So I try to do some things to lessen my overall footprint. One of the ways is through a comapny called EcoEnclosed (NOT sponsored, I just think they’re neat)

Reused Packaging

One of the ways I reduce this impact is through the use of... well... reusing! I reuse all of the packages that may come to my house, as well as find a lot of boxes and even paper mailers while out dumpster diving. These help a lot not just in reducing or even eliminating a form of cost, but also helping t reduce my overall carbon footprint. As well as my overall impact as a whole.

Water Activated Tape

Water Activated tape is a paper tape with a dry adhesive that activates when put in contact with water. I am not going to lie, it is kinda a pain to use.

I usually cut off the right amount of tape, and using a wet cloth, moisten the adhesive side of the tape. Then I have to quickly place the tape on the box before the tape dries. And sometimes I still have to re-wet some areas of the tape to ensure they stick.

But I would rather use that if it means less plastic use overall.

Cellulose Tape

I love cellulose tape, as it helps a ton when it comes to taping on shipping labels (or using it to stick calander printables on my wall). I need a clear tape, and cellulose tape is biodegradable, and not made from petrochemicals, so that makes me happy.

According to EcoEncloses website:

Facestock of the tape is made with virgin cellophane, a clear, transparent plastic-like sheet made of regenerated cellulose.

Tape adhesive is a synthetic rubber and hydrocarbon resin adhesive

That said, they do mention on their website that while the tape is biodegradable, it is not certified compostable. As a result, you are probably going to have to take this tape to a specific industrial composting facility.

Granted, studies have shown that cellulose biodegrades readily in soil after just 10 weeks, so... who knows?

To my fellow Artists and Vendors: If you’ve been looking for more sustainable and earth-friendly shipping/packaging solutions (like me) - check out Ecoenclose!!! I haven’t been feeling that great about how much packaging I use and wanted to find more eco-friendly packaging. Ecoenclose is all about using recycled and re-usable materials - they even have recyclable CLEAR BAGS AND POLY MAILERS 😱 That’s huge because plastic takes sooo long to degrade and most of it is NOT RECYCLABLE 😭 I’ve also been using cardboard mailers to ship prints, which you can get off Amazon. Although it does cost a little bit more to do all this, I feel the benefits far outweigh the costs and that my customers appreciate it 🤗 I’m not endorsed to say any of this, btw - just want to share the info and give ppl options.
