In a full field of 20 horses, Barbaro and jockey Edgar Prado charged ahead during the last turn of the Kentucky Derby to win the race by six and a half lengths on May 6, 2006 at Churchill Downs. Barbaro shattered his leg two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes, ending his racing career and eventually leading to his death. (Bill Frakes)

In 2009 I asked my sister who her favorite jockey was and she said "the one who rode Barbaro in the Derby and Preakness." I said "and who is your least favorite?" and she said "the one who rode the horse that beat Smarty Jones in the Belmont."

I died. I love how she called him by the nickname I've so lovingly given to him. He deserves to win the Eclipse Award for Older Male tonight just because of what he's gone through to get back to the races.
A viral infection, a quarter crack, five months off to recover from everything, horrible rides in the Criminal Type Stakes and the Whitney Handicap (gr. I), not to knock Edgar Prado, whom I love, but he needs to be in front at the eighth pole to win. It's strange, but he's undefeated if he's in front at that pole. Steve Haskin did a whole article about Moochie and the eighth pole. It's weird.
