Twilight Zone - Eye of the Beholder, 1960

Now the questions that come to mind: "Where is this place and when is it?" "What kind of world where ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation from that norm?" You want an answer? The answer is it doesn't make any difference, because the old saying happens to be true. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this year or a hundred years hence. On this planet or wherever there is human life – perhaps out amongst the stars – beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Lesson to be learned in the Twilight Zone.

I just learned that Edson Stroll, who played Prince Charming in Snow White and the Three Stooges, was also the kind, handsome "deformed" man at the end of the classic Twilight Zone episode "The Eye of the Beholder," who comforts the equally "deformed" (i.e beautiful) heroine Janet and leads her away to the community of "their kind."

I had no idea that was him until now!

The Truth Hurts

Edson Stroll (January 6, 1929 – July 18, 2011) was a 1950s bodybuilder turned actor who appeared in 2 very memorable episodes of “Twilight Zone”. In both, Stroll was clearly hired for his good looks.

In "Eye of the Beholder" (1960) a young but horribly disfigured Woman is awaiting the results of plastic surgery in the hopes she can live a regular life, not as a thing of ridicule. Throughout the episode she’s covered in bandages and the doctors and nurses are only shown in shadows. In the end we discover she is actually beautiful (actress Donna Douglas) and the doctors are freakish monsters. In the end she is taken to live in a community of similarly “disfigured” people - Stroll played the man who takes her to her new home.

In “The Trade-Ins” an old couple wants to spend their life savings on new young and perfect bodies. But they can only afford one. Due to the husband’s poor health they agree he should undertake the operation. The result? The husband, now played by Stroll, looks beautiful. But he realizes he wouldn’t be happy without his wife, so he asks for the operation to be undone.

I suppose Stroll didn’t mind being type-cast as a good looking guy, he played the handsome sailor Virgil Edwards in four seasons of “McHale’s Navy” (1962-1966) and in two theatrical releases.

Three Stooges fans may remember Edson Stroll from his roles in two of their movies - “Snow White and the Three Stooges” (1959) where he played Prince Charming naturally. And “The Three Stooges in Orbit” (1962) where Stroll played a handsome Air Force Captain
