The Dalgyal Gwishin [Korean folklore]
If you’re ever hiking in the mountains of Korea and you feel like you’re being watched, try to find your way home as soon as possible. In the worst case scenario, if you’re still on the mountain by nightfall, you may be visited by a spectral, floating girl with no face. Her ghostly appearance will be the last thing you see, as your life energy slowly gets sucked from your body.
The Dalgyal Gwishin, from Korean folklore, is more commonly known as ‘the egg ghost’.
While the name sounds goofy, the Dalgyal Gwishin is definitely one of the more dangerous creatures on this list. They have no limbs and a face that is pale and completely devoid of any traits or characteristics – it kind of resembles an egg, hence the name. It was believed that people who never had children might return after death to haunt the world of the living as an egg ghost. Other stories claim that these ghosts arise from the graves of people who never had loved ones. These creatures suck the life force out of their victims, which is always deadly. As such, nobody who sees a Dalgyal Gwishin will survive the encounter.
They dwell deep within the mountains and forests of Korea. The stories differ and some, more literal interpretations also claim that the ghost can literally transform into an egg, to hide or to lure curious people. Due to the lack of love and appreciation these spirits received in life, their humanity slowly erodes away, until the ghost is completely devoid of human emotions. As such, it has no reason or motivation to kill, and it cannot be communicated with. It just kills.

Inktober #31: Dalgyal Gwishin
The Dalgyal Gwishin or Egg Ghost is a Korean spirit that haunts remote locations deep in mountains of forests. She is faceless. She brings death to all with no motivation or mercy. There is no way to communicate with the Dalgyal Gwishin, no way to bargain for your soul. Her pale, blank face will be the last thing you see.
(Well, that’s all folks! I missed one day this month but I did a drawing a day otherwise. It is SUCH good practice and I encourage everyone to try it. Even if Halloween isn’t your thing, do a daily drawing challenge any time of the year)
