Feyre's eyes fluttered open, waking from an absurd dream. All those eggs she painted for Nyx were sure to be blamed. She spent last night painting with her sisters dozens of eggs with bright colors and eye-catching patterns: zizzags, polka dots, and stripes for his surprise egg hunt today after they all realized that at three years old, Nyx had a fondness for eggs.
She turned towards Rhys' side of the bed and found him wide awake and staring at her. His violet eyes shone brightly in their still-darkened room, pre-dawn.
"Nightmare?" he asked, his worry flowing down the bond. "I felt you. I heard you calling my name."
"Not a nightmare," she answered quickly, because it wasn't, and at the very least not the kind he was thinking of. "I was calling for you, though, because you were snatched away before me."
Rhys' eyes furrowed in confusion.
She leaned over, smoothing away those worry lines with a kiss planted in between his brows. "Do you remember those few special eggs I painted the faces of our family for Nyx to find?" Chuckling, she added, "Well, I dreamt we were those eggs in a strange other world."
Understanding, Rhys banded an arm around her waist, pulling her closer to him until they were chest to chest. "Show me."
And so she did. Through their wondrous bond, she sent the images from her dream. All of them were characters from a book—much like the ones Nesta loved to read—painted on eggs. Humans who had computers and phones, just like in Bryce's world, played an egg hunt game and competitively hunted for their favorite characters' eggs for 24 hours. The player with the most eggs wins. As the hours ticked by, Feyre watched the players beg, bargain, and curse the program to grant them any eggs, as her own egg-self stayed hidden. When Rhys was found before herself, she was distressed and shouted after him, but she soon calmed down when she was found right after and placed in storage together with her mate. Feyre woke before the egg hunt was finished.
Rhys smirked. "Of course they were begging to find me."
Feyre rolled her eyes at the smug prick, and at the sight of it, Rhys only smiled wider.
"But most importantly, Feyre darling, at the end of the game, they made you the commemorative egg."
"You don't know that."
"I don't need to have seen it to know it, my love."
Feyre smiled at her mate with affection and cupped his cheek. Playfully, she asked, "Would you have loved me even as an egg?"
"Yes, I would have loved you," he purred. "Who would not love Feyre Eggbreaker, the Defender of the Carton?"
She snorted at the nonsensical words but added, "Even if I wasn't your eggmate?"
"Even then," he confirmed, and before she knew it, she was on her back and his silken lips were on hers, kissing her with such uninhibited passion that she forgot her dream all together, all thoughts leaving her mind except her mate and his touch.
When the early morning sunlight filtered through the windows, they finally broke apart from their sweet entanglement. But before they rose from bed to prepare for Nyx's egg hunt, Feyre kissed Rhys one last time and, to his delight, uttered, "I would have loved you even as an egg too."
