minerva, with a wide grin the whole time: i’ve taken on a lover.
sprout: well thats great! congratulations! who is it?
minerva: severus’ mom.
sprout: …what?
minerva: severus’ mom, eileen! from that wedding we were all at.
sprout, laughing: you’re messing with me.
minerva: about what?
sprout: you did not sleep with severus’ mom.
minerva: oh, big time.
sprout: oh yeah? what kind of wand does she have?
minerva: she has a hawthorn wand-
sprout: oh fuck-
minerva: with a dragon heartstring core, and let me tell you, i’m still feeling the sparks.
sprout: oh my god.
minerva, gleefully unaware of sprouts distress: what?
sprout: okay, never tell severus, lets make a pact!
minerva: a pact? okay. although, i may have to break it tonight when me and eileen tell severus over dinner.
sprout: …oh my god, can i come watch?
Prince's primer of potions🥧
It's a little story that happened the day before Sev entering Hogwarts.
(I'll translate it later)
Maybe it was Eileen he heard talking shit about Muggles. Eileen, who married a Muggle and gave up her entire world for that Muggle—who lowered herself to live in a shitty neighborhood, in a shitty house, surrounded by shit, all for that Muggle. Eileen, who could have had a decent life in the magical world but ended up not even being able to buy her son clothes in the Muggle one—all because of a man. The same man who yelled and was violent and scary and made her existence miserable. So Eileen probably told her son how amazing the magical world was compared to the hellhole they lived in, the opportunities he could have, and how good it would feel to be among people like him—not among those Muggles who only brought misery, poverty, and violence.
Because Eileen is often portrayed as a helpless victim and fairly loving toward Severus, but I prefer to think she also contributed to her son's cognitive dissonance, to his resentment, and to his obsession with becoming someone in the magical world. That precisely because of the trauma and personal drama, she wasn't in any condition to be a functional mother, nor was she particularly emotionally close. And maybe, over the years, Severus felt torn between a certain affection for her—because, after all, she hadn’t been a total piece of shit like his father—but also a deep internal resentment for feeling like she had never truly protected him, despite being a witch and having the upper hand.
Eileen is not a villain.
There are many fanfics that portray Eileen as a cold, arrogant, and petty woman who only cares about herself, who hates her own son to the point of trying to kill him, who only cares about that idiot Tobias and nothing else. But nobody researches how the mind of a woman who suffers physical and psychological abuse works. If you don't know, I'll explain: abuse doesn't just start with insults and aggression; manipulation is also a form of abuse. Before everything started, it started with Tobias's manipulation, and YES, Eileen was manipulated. She thought she would be happy with Tobias because he manipulated her into thinking that way.
Now let's go back in time. Severus was born in 1960. Do you think it wasn't common for women to be beaten back then? Well, let me remind you, back then hitting a woman was like drinking water, it was the most common thing. If Eileen left her husband, she would be looked down upon by everyone around her and couldn't even work, because nobody would want to be associated with a woman who left her husband.
Eileen most likely loved Severus with all her soul and would do anything for him, but she couldn't. She was a woman, who had a child, suffered abuse from her husband, but the society of the time wouldn't help.
If it's difficult for a woman to get rid of her abuser today, imagine that in the 60s and 70s. It was practically impossible. And another thing, men who killed their wives could be acquitted with the excuse of "cleansing their honor." Yes, many women were murdered by their husbands, but they were acquitted.
So before you say that Eileen hated Severus, was a negligent mother, or was a terrible person, remember, she was also a victim, a victim of Tobias and a victim of the society she was born into.
You know what?
Lately I've been thinking a lot about Tobias Snape.
Because what if it was more complicated than we think?
What if he was ill-tempered but still had love for his wife and son?
What if he had no idea how to relate to them through their difference? What if he felt so awful about his failures in life, his lack of money and how much he wished he could provide more for them?
What if he wasn't just scared of magic or jealous or resentful?
What if he had little loving words to provide but plummeted people talking badly about his wife and kid? How dare they say his wife was ugly? She for sure wasn't. She was no beauty maybe, but she was a Lady. His Lady. She was lovely, she had a smile so gentle it burned the pain right off his heart when they had met. And he felt horrendous because she was not smiling as much now and he was unable to give her the life she deserved.
And his son - who inherited his mother's features and his terrible nose - his son with his dark eyes who looked at him like he was a stranger, his son he didn't know how to talk to anymore because nothing that ever came out of his mouth seemed good or gentle enough (why was he made like this?), his son who could make objects fly out to him, his son who was already more than he'd ever would be able to be himself, his own flesh who looked so much like his wife, another loved face who wasn't smiling at him and who he was disappointing.
And maybe he couldn't bear the absence of smiles on their faces because each day it was a reminder of how much he was failing them as a husband and father. He was killing himself in this shit factory for nothing, fucking nothing. He had nothing to provide, they were eating onion soup and stale potatoes for days and days and both of them were so thin - sure they were thin-bodied - but Tobias knew they could absolutely weight a couple more pounds and he couldn't even feed them and it was killing him.
And sometimes he hated himself so much, hated their unhappy faces so much that he couldn't do anything but break something. Because a twisted part of his brain was telling him he could maybe slap the sadness off of their faces. Because he had no words, no one had ever taught him how to use them. Only his fists. And when he saw the tears on Eileen's and Severus's cheeks he felt even worse but couldn't do anything about it, the words trapped in his mind and heart.
Because deep down he felt as if he was the worst thing that ever happened to them. Eileen would have been better off without him for sure.
And Severus... he would have never existed. Maybe it would have been better this way?
But imagining his son - his son - not existing was killing him as well.
He was his son. And he'd absolutely keep on knocking anyone's teeth uttering one wrong word about his son. Even if he was a shit father.
I'm thinking a lot about Tobias Snape.
How tall are you?
