Crack in the Mirror

Ever have a random scene just pop into your head? This is one of those.

For reference this takes place after this piece

The Crossroads contained many islands and many mirrors that had not yet fully documented. Davrin, Assan, Bellara, and a team made up of Wardens and Veil Jumpers had taken up the task of exploring and mapping the Crossroads.

As a part of their mapping they compiled a list of working Eluvians, as well as a list of Eluvians to avoid. Based on advice from an Dalish mage named Merrill and their own experience with the broken Eluvian in Arlathan, they avoided any Eluvian that was cracked or whose surface was deeply shadowed. They did not want to risk whatever might be on the other side of those mirrors.

An Eluvian with a single crack that split jaggedly down its middle lay on one island they'd mapped. There was one working Eluvian on this isle, though it took you to an unpleasant part of Feredlan known as the Fallowmire. No one really lived there now, between a former pestilence and the Fifth and Sixth Blights. Thus the isle had been mapped and then left alone, few thinking anyone would ever need to come here.

It was just another day, the strange endless daylight of Fade illuminating the cracked Eluvian. Normally the surface of the mirror lay matte and gray, lifeless.

Today, though, the surface of the mirror shimmered, colored and shifting like oil on water. It undulated for several minutes, then sprang to life, briefly. A tall, dark haired man in worn armor and a woman with inky blue black hair in a torn and stained Warden's uniform staggered out of the Eluvian. As they stumbled to the ground a loud cracking noise wss heard and the glass fell in pieces from the Eluvian, leaving only an empty frame.

The man used his staff to pull himself up then offered the Warden a hand. Together they looked around them.

"Where in Void are we?" He demanded.

The woman frowned and cocked her head, then relief flickered over her features. "We're in the Crossroads. We just need to find a ferry and the Caretaker."

"You're absolutely certain?" He asked. "Solas could have put us anywhere. This is the Dread Wolf we're talking about."

"After the amount of time you and I spent bargaining with him?" the Warden asked. She pulled a lyrium dagger from her belt. "He did not give this up lightly."

"Forgive me for being paranoid," the man said dryly, "Given that it was ultimately Solas's fault I was trapped in the Fade for over a decade, based on what you've told me."

"Oh, I don’t blame you at all, Hawke, not after Solas dragged me into the Fade with him when I tied the Veil to his life force." the Warden replied. "We are in the Crossroads at least, though, and we can find our way to the waking world from here."

He snorted. "That, Rook, is the best news I've heard in a long time. You know it does seem fitting that I stayed in thr Fade to save a Warden, and it's a Warden who freed me."

"Come on, let's go find the ferry," Rook told him, then led Hawke towards the far end of the island.

Behind them, the empty frame of an Eluvian and a pile of broken glass remained."

I’ve been thinking about how eluvians were made and I have come to a horrifying conclusion now that Veilguard is out - they are made with spirits.

Consider:

The Nadas Dirthalan is a bound spirit that acts as a sort of computer. So, it’s possible binding a spirit to a mirror could somehow make instant transportation possible.

The Evanuris enslaved spirits as well as the elves. I’ve always thought that was just them binding them to bodies or in the more traditional mage binding sense but now…

The guardians we fight are magical constructs but what powers them? Fade magic alone? Or are they also bound spirits?

We know the Blight corrupts spirits.

We know the Blight corrupts living things but we have two examples of inanimate objects that are corrupted - the idol which is also probably the Wolf’s Fang and the eluvians. Why the eluvians in particular?

Solas was able to convince the eluvians to work for him and tells Felassan they are on the side of the rebels.

So what if June created the eluvians by permanently binding spirits to them?

Solas would have hated that of course but being the pragmatist he is would have used them since the damage was already done.

Anyway just a weird thought…

So I have this idea about eluvians in the game. Basically they're supposed to be this pretty rare ancient elven thing but there are several that you use in Dragon Age the Veilguard. Which easily handwaved because it's a game and you have to get places somehow.

But I like the idea that I saw in another post (which I can't find) that a bunch of eluvians woke up after Solas's failed ritual. I have just been imagining that Teia had bought the eluvian that's in the Cantori Dimond because she thought it was an art piece. Just some slab that had some neat arches around the edges - maybe to eventually turn into a fresco or something for where she put it - but didn't think much of it.

Then all of a sudden it's a magic mirror and she has no fucking clue why that happened and no idea if it's dangerous or not. Then my little Veil Jumper comes by and and confirms 'oh yeah, that's an eluvian - you can use it to travel and you just saved us travel time showing us this'.

You know Teia would have that thing under armed guard after she realizes it's a mirror that allows anyone with access from the other side to just waltz into her base of operations.

about Eluvians

there are 2 types of eluvians

June's eluvians

Solas' eluvians

(this is all explained in codex u find in the crossroads (thank u Felassan) thought this could be handy for fic stuff but also bc i think it's funny that Solas had to 1 up June's research lol)

June's eluvians are made from twinned lyrium shards; they only ever act as a long distance portal. One half of the mirror will always only transport you to the other half of that mirror.

the eluvians we travel through in trespasser are likely june's eluvians, they only ever lead their 1 paired eluvian (like how the eluvian in the winter palace always spits you out at the same eluvian in the crossroads)

Solas' eluvians are able to change which portal/eluvian they open to. So the vir revas (the big ass one in the lighthouse) can change which eluvian it opens to, whether to one of solas' or june's it seems. This is why that eluvian in particular is able to link to the one in treviso and hossberg and etc etc

[this is explained as solas "talking the crossroads into making Fade-eluvians that override june's eluvians" and this becomes their pocket network for the rebellion]

the eluvian Morrigan brings to skyhold also seems to be one of Solas'? Since Kieran can redirect where it opens (he changes it from opening to a mirror in the crossroads to a mirror in the fade)

Six Sentence Sunday: The Heretic: Two Queens

Light horror. 

Talek’s form was a dim silhouette against the glimmering Eluvian shrouded in darkness, but there was something beyond it that caught my attention.

Inside of it, a formless shape unraveled, a black mass passed just under the surface repeatedly, whatever it was seemed to be pacing. The hairs on the back of my neck stood proudly on gooseflesh when a ferocious growl grumbled into my ears.

“Is…is that--?” I had sunk to the ground and Solas’s hand followed my neck.

“Stand down.” He whispered as his fingers glided along my face and Talek trudged along.

I was paralyzed by terror, it waited just beyond the surface, jaws slathering, six red eyes unblinking, a gargantuan predator held back only by magic glass.
