sorry for going off the grid for like... over a week. i missed when i passed 4k, but thank you all for following! Here's a picture of one of my cats 🐈
I have no work issued health benefits under capitalism and this is surprising to some people for whatever reason
I have no work issued health benefits. I don’t even think there’s a McDonald’s Union to rally for paid fifteen minute breaks. We used to get unpaid fifteen minute breaks if we worked 8+ hours, but after the provincial minimum wage hikes, these breaks were revoked.
We now get one unpaid half hour break if you work five hours or more. Even when we had the fifteen minute breaks, you had to ask for them. Otherwise they would not tell you to go on that additional break
I work minimum wage, and yet the fact that I have zero work issued health benefits still surprises many people. Not foreigners, but locals. I just got back from the hospital because I have only slept once in the past four days. I needed to get a doctor’s note saying I was going to be late so I could talk to my personal doctor about this problem.
When I mentioned that I will not be getting paid for any time I miss during my shift, he was also baffled by how I have:
zero paid sick days (so u either show up, suffer AND spread your illness, or you stay home to rest and lose however much money you were supposed to make during that shift)
zero work issued health coverage
zero extended health benefits
and if I don’t provide a doctor’s note or a good enough excuse for calling into work, I can get written up for not booking that day off.
He also couldn’t understand how I could afford to live independently on $13.40 CAD an hour. This is not even minimum wage in BC. I make a little bit above minimum wage because I have worked at this McDonald’s restaurant for over five years.
I’ve been written up at least twice for sitting down due to the pain in my feet from standing for several hours. Neither time was I ever warned that I would be written up if I continued to sit down. They never told me not to sit down until they issued the write up. They literally just told me “we’re writing you up because you’re sitting down while clocked in.”
Even when I provided a doctor’s note proving I had pain in my feet and needed to sit down for a few minutes at a time during long shifts, I got written up again. Just the same as last time, I received no verbal warning before the write up. Their excuse was “breaks are unpaid, and because you are taking small breaks while clocked in, we’re writing you up.”
So each time I need to sit down for five fucking minutes, I have to clock out and then clock back in once the pain in my feet has somewhat dissipated. I take two or three long lasting painkillers each shift 6 hours or longer to help alleviate the pain and minimize additional small breaks. At one point, I was taking the maximum dosage of acetaminophen five days a week just to not be in pain at work. Which by the way, increases my risk for liver failure.
Oh, and because I’m Canadian and most of my health expenses are covered by the public health care system, I pay under $10 CAD per month for my prescription medication. Extended healthcare costs are not covered under the public health care plan though, so I had to pay full price for my glasses (almost $400) and replacing my retainer (around $200).
That means that Americans have it infinitely worse than I do because a trip to the ER can be $1000 USD. But for me, it’s free. I don’t even have to have my ID on me. I just walk in and tell them my name, and they look me up in the system. Doctor’s appointments are also free.
This is what capitalism is. Treating your employees like shit, then blaming them for the repercussions of treating them like shit.
tfw ur unmedicated and ask multiple times for help but literally no one bothers even listening to your problems
