episode 85: An Outcast's Dream! Hiriluk the Quack!

ah, but i love him so...

poking through frame by frame, i caught this PHENOMENAL frame of doctorine kicking sanji into next week.

i no joke, love hiriluk's design from the first time we saw him. the hat and hair are so wonderfully absurd. and his DOCTOR CROSSES being his shirt buttons is so... subtle. i love it. genuinely awesome design. oda really hits this arc especially.

love love LOVE that they have a history together! def one of my favorite parts of the show, learning how so many characters are connected.

this scene is brutal and heartbreaking. hiriluk having the tranq gun be mistaken for a real one is tragic enough, but poor chopper is just in pain. great moment, and god damn did they animate the fuck outta this. there is some SMOOTH animation here as hiriluk gets fucking bodied.

love the relationship they have. the good, the bad, the fighting. all of it. there's love there. also in this scene, they have a fucking amazing gag where chopper and hiriluk both momentarily leap out of the dust cloud to take a breath, then jump back in. screenshots don't do it justice, one of the best jokes in a while that made me guffaw.

aughh screaming crying throwing up look at how cute he is. his little tears and flushed cheeks!!! oh my god i love chopper.

finally learning hiriluk's motivation, and i kinda fuck with it. absurd, yes, but also kinda brilliant. like, i get it.

love his flag, love the blossom, love his energy.

hiriluk may have been weird, but he has a good perspective on the world. i like this line because it gives him some good emotional depth.
