Characters that I Headcanon as Epileptic

Well, it’s the last day of Epilepsy Awareness Month and after spending the month focusing on canon epileptic characters, here’s a list of some of the characters that I see as having epilepsy:

Cyclops, X-Men

As a kid, he had a serious head injury and all throughout childhood, he would regularly experience severe headaches until he passed out from the pain. He has a lot of missing memories from childhood partly because of this.

Also, I’ve always thought his powers were a good metaphor for controlling epilepsy. Because of his head injury, the part of his brain that controls his eye blasts doesn’t work as it should. Thus, his powers are always on even when he can limit them with his glasses. I kind of related to that experience when I first found out how frequently my brain was experiencing seizure activity even with medication.

Danny Torrance, The Shining and Doctor Sleep

Charlie McGee, Firestarter

All child psychics/pyrokenetics in Stephen King’s books are epileptics but especially these two.

Billy Pilgrim, Slaughterhouse Five

Just the entire concept of being “unstuck in time” felt so relatable from an epileptic perspective as time really becomes a meaningless concept when having a seizure.

Ford Pines, Gravity Falls

He experienced severe electrical trauma during the series finale which probably could have resulted in him developing epilepsy as a result. Also, I headcanon him as epileptic because I love this wonderful dorky old owl

I don’t always post fanart doodles on my Epilepsy Blog, but when I do, it’s of my Epileptic Headcanons. How do I show that a character is epileptic? You give them a medical ID and a cheesy TShirt of course!

Potions for people with epilepsy that act like medicine without making them drowsy or anything or at least having a lower risk of side effects

I’m doing a Harry Potter re-read for the first time in almost a decade and I forgot how much relatable epilepsy content was in Prisoner of Azkaban.

There’s:

The fact that while everyone can be affected by the Dementors’ presence, only Harry seems to faint and have convulsive seizures around them

He has something remarkably similar to a complex auditory aura every time he passes out

He experiences a postictal state of confusion and disorientation after his encounters with Dementors

Chocolate being used as a powerful post-seizure restorative (it’s always been my go-to food post-seizure)

He’s nearly kicked off his Quidditch team unless he can gain control over how he’s affected by seizure triggering things, similar to how epileptics in sports are often sidelined until they have control over their seizures

The book really goes into how embarrassing it can be for teenagers (or really anyone) to have a seizure in front of a large group of people

The book specifically describes his reaction as being a “fit” and a “seizure”

I mean, how am I only just now realizing Harry may have had epilepsy?

@fuckepilepsy asked what’s our favorite epilepsy headcanon and I have 2!

I headcanon Ford Pines, a character from Gravity Falls, to have developed epilepsy post-series due to electrical trauma he received in the finale of the series. I picked up this headcanon from a number of fantastic writers in the fandom, most notably @embulalia fantastic fanfic Two Old Men and the Sea and @the-tiny-dragon excellent Epileptic Ford AU.

Everyone who writes Ford with epilepsy also seems to headcanon that his twin brother, Stan, does a wonderful job helping Ford with his seizures while Ford himself helps out Stan with his own memory issues. I am 100% behind this good and supportive headcanon as well.

I also headcanon Mike Nelson (the lovable mug between the two robots) from Mystery Science Theater 3000 to have developed epilepsy due to head trauma near the start of his run on the show but that he has it under control via medication. I completely got this headcanon from @unleashedart‘s amazing fic A Good Egg, but a Little Scrambled and especially this really cute fan art.
