Disabled Robert Chase Headcanons

CW for normal House shit. C-slur and whatnot.

(Post-stabbing in season 8)

Written by a physically disabled guy with a sick sense of humor.

In this scenario, Chase never regains range of motion or much feeling in his left leg

Despite all the PT attempts, Chase’s right leg recovered from the stab-related clot but his left never did, much to his frustration

Once he learns his mobility issues will be more long-term, Chase switches from underarm to forearm crutches. Occasionally uses a wheelchair for worse days.

House takes it upon himself to come up with as many new nicknames for Chase as possible - after declaring, of course, that “I’m the original cripple.” And “now they’re gonna think something’s wrong in Diagnostics with Cripple One—” (himself) “—and Cripple Two—” (Chase) “—over here”

The rest of House’s team and Foreman are much more normal about Chase’s disability than House is.

Chase and Foreman work out ways to make the OR and other parts of the hospital more accessible for him

Chase has kept in contact with Thirteen, and they go out for drinks sometimes. Thirteen was nice enough to give some advice on dealing with an acquired disability. She also jokes that he’ll get twice the ladies now because he’s got a cool “battle hero” story

House definitely sword fights with Chase at some point - House with his cane and Chase with one of his crutches. They end in a draw in the hospital lobby, Wilson and Foreman pulling them away from one another while they flail their “weapons.”

There’s also a never-ending slew of shitty jokes from House, too. When Chase is using his wheelchair, “You got a license for that thing?” Or “When someone sucks your dick, is that Meals on Wheels?”

However, this also now means that Chase can fire back at House without having to worry about any HR problems.

One day they have a competition of who can trip the other one more with their aid. House wins and fucks up Chase for a few days, who relies on his wheelchair for the time being. However, House soon has to get treatment for his toes that were “mysteriously run over by an unnamed, angry, wheelchair-bound doctor.”

After House “dies” and Chase takes over Diagnostics, sometimes patients will mistake him for Dr. House because of his crutches. These comparisons both hurt and warm Chase.

House left a cane for Chase to find in his old office. Chase had it boxed and framed and it now lives on the right wall of his office - a reminder of the man who came before him.

Regulus Black with a mobility aid, inspired by a post from @/youdrewstars_aroundmyscars on instagram.

- Regulus has cerebral palsy, as a result of a gene mutation causing his brain to develop differently

- Specifically he has ataxic cerebral palsy, so he has trouble with balance and coordination when walking, and he has a hard time with quick movements and with tasks such as writing which require a lot of control

- He also is deaf as a result of a gene mutation, which also led to slight "issues" in his pronunciation when talking

- His parents always ignored his disabilities as a child, instead liking to pretend he was able bodied, and never giving him the help and support he needed

- He was forced into speech therapy, and his parents would always force him to try "walk properly without falling over" so as to not "ruin their reputation"

- When his speech didn't get much better and he still couldn't miraculously hear them, Regulus' parents finally got him a cochlear implant at age 9, but that was all the support he ever got

- Once Regulus got to Hogwarts, he decided to take matters into his own hands

- The speech therapy has stopped, which he was glad about, but he was still slow and unsteady on his feet and struggled with writing and moving quickly

- After a couple weeks scouring the library, Regulus found a charm he could put on his quill so that it would write for him, and that was one accommodation he found for himself, his classmates giving him odd looks but never questioning it

- After much deliberation, after struggling with the stairs and walking to his classes on time, Regulus decided to get himself a cane

- Just after Christmas in his first year, Regulus got Sirius to help him in finding and buying a cane, as Sirius had been through this with Remus already and was more than happy to help his little brother

- Regulus got his cane in January of 1973 while still in first year, and of course people asked him what it was for, why he needed it, even went as far as to tell him he couldn't possibly need it as he was only 12 years old

- This got to Regulus at first, but then he remembered about Remus and his cane, how cool it made him look, and he began strutting around Hogwarts with his head held high, death staring anyone who dare question him or look at him the wrong way

- Regulus was still a little unsteady with the cane, and still had to go quite slowly, but it helped, and that was what mattered

- So Regulus used his cane for a few years, leaving it at Hogwarts over Christmas and asking Sirius to send it home with James over summer so that his parents didn't crucify him, and all was well, he was finally getting aid in walking and it was a lot easier for him

- In his 5th year, having run away from home with Sirius the previous year to live with James, it finally hit Regulus that he was free. For good. He could use any aids he needed without worry of consequence from his parents

- He decided that he wanted to try out a walker, as he thought this would help with his balance a lot more than the cane did

- Over Christmas break of his 5th year, while at the Potter's, Regulus brought up the idea with Effie and Monty, who were more than happy to help him, and were very happy that he was finally asking for help and not completely hiding his feelings anymore

- Within 2 days, they had found a walker that seemed suitable and it was in the house, ready for Regulus to try out

- That day, Sirius, Remus, James, and Regulus, Peter and Marlene both living nearby but occupied with family activities, went for a walk down to the village, Remus with his cane mainly to help Regulus feel more confident, and Regulus with his brand new walker

- It did help, it helped a lot. And while Regulus was sad he didn't get the chance to get one earlier in his life, he was thrilled that he had one now

- With the walker, he could balance a lot better than he could with the cane, and he could even walk a little faster, not having to slow the group down any slower than Remus' pace with his cane

- Regulus used the walker every day of Christmas break from there, even when they all took a trip to Diagon Alley together

- In Diagon Alley, while Regulus did get a few stares from older witches and a few people in his classes, he employed the tactic he had used when he first got his cane; head held high and death stare all the way, and he made his way through all of the shops happily talking with his brother and his friends, more confident than ever

- Going back to Hogwarts, Regulus hit the issue of the many stairs in the building, not being able to use his walker up them

- He settled for using his cane at any time where he had to go up stairs, and using his walker whenever possible

- Regulus finished Hogwarts confidently using his mobility aids, no longer worrying about people's opinions of him, and continued to use his aids out in the world, with his boyfriend (boyfriend !!) James Potter and his brother and brother in law always by his side

wish spn talked about disability. there’s so many characters where their implicit symptoms of disabilities are integral to how I view them. Cas’s autistic traits inform his characterization for me. Sam’s implied dissociative disorder/psychotic traits/dangerous substance use are a major part of his story. Dean’s chronic pain and PTSD traits play into his choices and how he holds himself. these implications of disability were never named in the series and it’s something I wish spn had tackled because of how inextricably linked the characters and their implied disabilities are.

Okay so I always see people write autistic Steve very similarly n I love that but I also don't see a lot of autistic Steve I can relate much to so I thought I'd mix it up a bit (+ some hypermobile!Steve too just for fun):

- Steve doesn't flap, it hurts his wrists and makes his ligaments feel weird under his skin but he enjoys tensing and relaxing his hands, properly flaring all of his fingers out and rolling his thumb to get the full stretch before letting his fingers go completely floppy.

- When he melts down it's not very obvious, he just gets very shouty and knife-edge about things without really meaning to and as soon as he realises he makes sure to apologise and try to lower his tone, the full meltdown tends to come out as soft shivery crying as soon as he's alone, curled into as tight a ball as he can to try and stop himself from knocking his knuckles on his forehead or punching the wall.

- even Robin and Eddie don't pick up on him masking a lot of the time because to be quite honest Steve's lost track of his own masking and will often end up micro-napping from sheer exhaustion until either robin or Eddie tells him to go to bed and he can drop the mask fully

- also stims by cracking his joints to release the pressure build-ups and also cause the pop-crunch sound is Really Fuckin Satisfying

- doesn't enjoy long contact or very gentle contact like someone stroking his arm, hugs, having a head rested on his shoulder, but will just randomly poke the others' noses or squidge their knees to show affection (he does expect to be booped back on the nose if he does this because that's important to him)

- will only use his walking aids with them wrapped in tape to stop the adjustment button clicking in it's hole because that's The Bad Sensory, though this proves an issue when he decides to borrow Eddie's platform boots one day and can't adjust the height.

- Steve's favourite stim toy is this old golf ball he stole off his dad, he likes running his thumb over the dimples and rolling it between his hands. He's tried all of the expensive ones on the market, but this golf ball and a clothes peg he can make a nice tapping sound with will always win out.

- his spin fluctuates a hell of a lot but always seems to loop back around to whatever job he's working at the time. At scoops he got really into the ice cream production process and how different flavourings affect how the ice cream melts, at family video he's gone on a few deep dives into different movie genres, certain actors, certain directors, and more recently how disability is shown in film.
